Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, who made a splash illustrating three of the four parts of the "Batman: Year Two" storyline in Detective Comics, revealed he also did uncredited work for Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

On Facebook, McFarlane posted an image of Wizard Magazine #32, dated April 1994 and featuring a jam cover of Batman and Spawn, drawn by himself and Frank Miller. McFarlane said the cover "made me think of a STORY when I was an inker for Frank. Interested yet?!"

McFarlane recounted that he was visiting a fellow comics artist, whom he did not name, when artist Klaus Janson showed up. "Klaus came over and dropped a bunch of pages off to my friend who was helping out on the backgrounds of that mini-series. He told my pal that he needed the pages back in a couple days. When Klaus left my friend turned to me and said, 'Hey Todd, can you help me ink these pages while you’re here?'"

"I was thinking, 'Are you kidding? I get to work on Frank’s new BATMAN book!'" McFarlane continued. "So, that evening I sat at a table and tried to do my best impersonation of Klaus Jason inking over Frank Miller. I still remember what I inked on those pages!!"

Originally released as a four-part prestige format series in 1986, The Dark Knight Returns went on to become a seminal work in the DC Universe, influencing Batman's depiction ever after in comics, film and animation. Elements of it were even adapted for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
