Danny DeVito wants to reprise his iconic role as The Penguin in a direct continuation to Tim Burton's 1992 film Batman Returns, which starred Michael Keaton as Batman and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman.

"I feel like it’s not out of the question that The Penguin will return someday, but this is all up to Tim, whether or not Tim wants to do this," DeVito told Forbes. "I would say that could be in the cards because we ain’t dead yet (laughs). We could do a continuation of what we had in the past because that was truly a brilliant movie. They afforded me that opportunity and I feel very grateful and would I like to revisit it? Why not! It was a really great moment in time for me."

Although it remains to be seen if DeVito will revisit The Penguin on the big screen, the actor just wrote a short comic book story centered on the DC supervillain. Titled "Bird Cat Love," DeVito’s story is featured in DC's newly-released Gotham City Villains Anniversary 100-page anthology. The tale centers on a surprising romance between The Penguin and Catwoman.

Michael Keaton will be reprising his role as Batman in the upcoming DC film The Flash, so it's not out of the question that DeVito's Penguin could appear in the DC multiverse. In the meantime, Colin Farrell is taking on the role in Matt Reeves' upcoming film, The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader and Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman. DeVito shared his thoughts on Farrell becoming Penguin in the latest Batman adaptation, saying, "I love Colin Farrell. He’s one of my favorite actors. I can’t wait!"

Unlike DeVito’s Penguin, who played a major role in Burton’s Batman sequel, Farrell recently revealed he doesn’t have much screen time in The Batman. "I'm only in it for five or six scenes [as Penguin], so I can't wait to see the film 'cause it won't be ruined by my presence," he said. "It's a freebie for me. I'll get a little uncomfortable for the fucking nine minutes I have and then the rest I cannot wait to see how [writer/director Matt Reeves] brought this world to life."

Burgess Meredith was the first to play the DC supervillain on the 1960s Batman TV show. More recently, Robin Lord Taylor portrayed a young Penguin on the Fox series Gotham.
