WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Batman: Gotham Nights #11's "Reunion," by Steve Orlando, Priscilla Petraites, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Ryan Christy, available now.

There are tons of elite assassins in the DC Universe. Cheshire recently almost kill Batman, while others like the trigger-happy Gunsmith, Katana, Lady Shiva, Talia al Ghul, Deadshot and, of course, the League of Assassins have wreaked a lot of havoc over the years. While they're all particularly well-known, Batman: Gotham Nights #11 brings back a forgotten killer: Codename: Assassin -- and he comes close to taking out Red Hood.

Created by Gerry Conway, Steve Skeates and Nestor Redondo for 1976's 1st Issue Special #11, Jonathan Drew/Codename: Assassin sought revenge for his sister's death. Drew was the subject of science experiments that gave him telekinesis and telepathy. Later, Drew became a vigilante, and his powers helped make his job easier. However, the modern incarnation of Drew is more a sniper and gunman in the style of Deathstroke. Even his outfit is somewhat similar to Slade Wilson's.

In Gotham Nights #11, Jonathan is hunting Numbers, a former friend of Jason who grew up with the future Red Hood at Ma Gunn's home, where she groomed criminals. He ended up working for fiends such as the Penguin and Two-Face, and now a senator wants Numbers dead, as he knows where a lot of bodies are buried. Jason, though, owes Numbers a debt. When they were younger, Jason switched out ammo for rock salt during training. Jason didn't want anyone to get hurt, but before he could fess up, Numbers took the blame and shielded his buddy.

Assassin takes advantage of a running train and a silenced gun to get his job done without making any obvious sounds. However, Jason intercepts him in mid-air, and they crash into a room. There, they start boxing with their pistols, and Assassin pushes Red Hood to the limit. With one bullet left in Assassin's gun, Jason tries to fake having one, too. However, Drew has done the math, leaving Jason with no choice but to trick him into firing.

Drew hits Jason in the shoulder. Red Hood then challenges his opponent to reload. Drew attempts to do so, but Red Hood throws his gun at his opponent's head, knocking him out. It's a lightning-fast brawl, but it leaves Jason shaken. He's stitching up his wounds, exhausted at what happened and looking at Assassin tied up on the ground. The battle was truly a harrowing one for Jason, and it's not often he ends up in situations where he's so equally matched.

Clearly, Assassin is someone Red Hood underestimated, and the character should absolutely appear more, since he works well as Jason's version of Deathstroke. He's smart, intimidating and has a knack for upgrading, so it would make a lot of sense for him to come back for revenge  in the future, providing another brutally violent clash that Red Hood would relish.
