This summer sees the arrival of DC's massive Batman crossover event "Joker War," where the Clown Prince of Crime will target Gotham City and Dark Knight, more deadly than ever before.

In his latest newsletter, Batman writer James Tynion IV shared new details about the storyline's teased lethal vigilante Clownhunter, providing the upcoming character's backstory and his bloody reputation along with a piece of character design art by Jorge Jimenez.

"When I first thought up the name Clownhunter, I was thinking about a story that was going to follow Joker War (I don’t even think "Joker War" was called "Joker War" at that point). There was a story that was going to come out of the event, and I wanted to create this mysterious clown hunting character," recalled Tynion IV. "And then Punchline happened, and the particular story I was introducing Clownhunter for evaporated, and I was looking at my plans for "Joker War" and noticed that I was missing something pretty big in the story."

Tynion IV was interested in creating a new character that provided P.O.V. from Gotham on the street-level, observing the changes throughout the city while reacting with the radicalization of youth. With the city reacting to the ongoing conflict between Batman and the Joker, this character will violently defend his neighborhood without directly being associated to either of the iconic characters. With that in mind, Tynion IV and Jimenez developed the more lo-fi, lethal vigilante as a reflection of the violently changing city. The resulting Clownhunter is now set to debut in Batman #96, "Joker War'"s second chapter.

"Clownhunter is a quiet, weird kid who lives in the Narrows. He mumbles jokes to himself under his breath, but doesn’t speak up in class or while he’s gaming late at night. When he was a kid, he saw his parents killed by the Joker, and his life was saved by Batman," explained Tynion IV. "He idolized Batman for years. But when "Joker War" starts, and Batman can’t stop it out the gate, he picks up a baseball bat, hammers in the Batarang Batman gave him as a kid, and goes out to start killing the Clown gang members terrorizing his neighborhood."

Tynion IV Also notes that if Punchline reflects the new generation of Gotham villains, Clownhunter reflects the new generation of vigilantes. The pair joins the Designer as characters who have memorably made an impact during Tynion IV's tenure on the ongoing series, which kicked off this past January.

Written by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Guillem March, Batman #92 goes on sale June 9 from DC Comics.
