Among the most intriguing additions to Batman's inner circle in DC Comics' Rebirth initiative has been his longtime enemy Basil Karlo, aka Clayface, recruited to the Dark Knight's new team of Gotham City protectors. However, in January's Detective Comics Annual #1, writer James Tynion IV and artist Eddy Barrows will take the reformed shapeshifter back to his villainous roots -- at least temporarily -- as Clayface's origin story is retold for the current continuity.
According to the DC's solicitations, Detective Comics Annual #1 will revisit Clayface's "shocking, heartbreaking origin," which includes the accident that transformed him from handsome actor to horrifying monster, as well as his first encounter with Batman.
Despite becoming a valued member of Batman's team, recent issues of Detective Comics have hinted at Clayface returning to his old, monstrous ways. While the upcoming annual could be nothing more than a simple retelling of the character's origin, one can't help but wonder if this means that Karlo's days on the right side of the law are numbered.
Here is the full solicitation text for the issue:
“Clay”! Here it is: the shocking, heartbreaking origin of Clayface, including his first conflict with Batman! Actor Basil Karlo was on the cusp of fame and fortune...the kind he had dreamed of through his painful childhood...until a accident robbed him of the good looks that took him to the top. But scars don’t make you a monster—only the darkness in your heart can do that—and in the wake of the accident, Karlo’s darkness is revealed!
Detective Comics Annual #1, written by James Tynion IV with art by Eddy Barrows, goes on sale Jan. 31.
