Wednesday, Aug. 11 marked the series premiere of Marvel Studios' What If...? on Disney+. As such, the social media accounts for a number of DC shows began using the #WhatIf hashtag to gently rib the competition. However, the Twitter account for Harley Quinn may have had the best response of all."#WhatIf Batman does do THAT," the show's official Twitter page shared along with a cat emoji, clearly alluding to Batman performing oral sex on Catwoman.

For the uninitiated, Harley Quinn co-showrunner Justin Halpern explained in June how Season 3 of the adult animated series was originally going to include a scene featuring Batman going down on Catwoman. At the request of DC, however, it was left on the cutting room floor.

"It’s incredibly gratifying and free to be using characters that are considered villains because you just have so much more leeway," Halpern said. "A perfect example of that is in this third season of Harley [when] we had a moment where Batman was going down on Catwoman. And DC was like, 'You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that.' They’re like, 'Heroes don’t do that.' So, we said, 'Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers?' They were like, 'No, it’s that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It’s hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone.'"

It didn't take long for this news to take the Internet by storm, with Batman Forever's Val Kilmer and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's Zack Snyder quickly weighing in. A petition even surfaced in which fans demanded DC "Let the Bat Eat the Cat."

Harley Quinn premiered in 2019 on DC Universe and was folded into HBO Max upon the former service's closure. The show centers on Harley following an epic breakup with The Joker, and critics have praised it for its stellar voice cast and its adult spin on countless classic DC characters, including Batman and his infamous rogues gallery.

Harley Quinn features Kaley Cuoco as the voice of the eponymous antihero. HBO Max has yet to confirm the Season 3 premiere date, though co-showrunner Patrick Schumacker estimated in October 2020 that it would likely arrive sometime in late 2021.
