The Batman Family has room for a lot of characters and one of the most popular among them is Cassandra Cain, who has adopted numerous monikers over the years, ranging from Batgirl to Orphan.

She is the daughter of Sandra aka Lady Shiva and was brought up by David Cain. Cain tried to mold Cassandra into a perfect bodyguard for an iconic DC supervillain, Ra's al Ghul, but Cassandra had other ideas. Realizing the bad people Cain works for, Cassandra decided to leave him behind and eventually gained Bruce Wayne's trust to become the Batgirl. Here are some things that happened in Gotham during her Black Bat days that came immediately after she dropped the Batgirl codename.

10 Bruce Wayne's Return

Batman

When Cassandra dropped the Batgirl moniker, it was due to many reasons and one of them was a promise to Bruce Wayne. They had a contingency plan in place if Batman ever went missing, without any trace. Cassandra had to drop the Batgirl codename and for the time being, she had to give it to Stephanie as that was the plan. She went into hiding, as a result, before, eventually, Bruce Wayne returned to Gotham.

9 Tim Drake's Plea

DC Comics

During her days undercover, Cassandra used to keep up to date about the goings-on in Gotham and her contact was none other than Tim Drake. When Bruce Wayne returned to Gotham, he announced that he wanted to create a team of Batman that would fight crime globally. As a result, Tim went to Hong Kong to meet Cassandra and ask her to come back as everything now was back to normal. But, she declined and there were numerous reasons behind that decision.

8 The Global Team Of Batman

This was a decision taken by Bruce Wayne after considering everything. He was getting old and he knew he wouldn't be able to look after Gotham for long. Thus, as soon as he returned to his home city, he made his intentions pretty clear. To date, this team of Batman aka the Bat Family has consisted of Nightwing, Black Bat, Batgirl, Red Hood, Red Robin, Batwoman, Batwing, KingBat, and NightRunner. Adapting this into the DCEU would be a very tough job but it will eventually happen due to the gigantic possibilities.

7 Cassandra's New Codename

Leaving Gotham and the Batgirl behind was a good thing for Cassandra as she became mature and understood there is more to life than trying to earn a Vigilante name.

She told Tim in very certain terms that Stephanie is the new Batgirl and she doesn't need the codename. Tim, though, tried to persuade Cassandra by showing her the old costume she used to wear. Eventually, Cassandra agreed to return to Gotham but under a new codename, Black Bat.

6 The Architect

Before going to Gotham, Black Bat aka Cassandra brought down a huge drug-smuggling operation in Hong Kong. The main fight was back at her home, though, when a supervillain called The Architect committed some nefarious acts of violence. He destroyed three Gotham Bridges by the use of explosives smuggled in from Hong Kong which Black Bat couldn't stop. As a result, she felt guilty about the whole thing and was willing to go the extra step in order to stop this new threat.

5 Damien's Lesson

Damian Wayne

As mentioned above, Cassandra's exile gave her an opportunity to think about who she is and who she wants to be. She grew over the Vigilante names that were offered to her and Damien Wayne, the new Robin, learned that lesson the harsh way. While chasing The Architect, Red Robin, Dick Grayson, Damien Wayne, and Black Bat found themselves working together and at every opportunity, Damien mocked Cassandra and told her how unimportant she was to Bruce Wayne. Of course, Cassandra didn't pay him any notice and she saved Damien's life during that shakeout, giving the new Robin a good lesson in respect.

4 Cassandra's Decision

Cassandra Cain AKA Orphan

When Cassandra was chasing The Architect, she hadn't made a decision about going to Hong Kong or staying in Gotham, although Tim and Bruce hoped it would be the latter. Dick Grayson got some information about what The Architect is trying to do next and an unlikely partnership between Damien and Cassandra helped to bring The Architect to justice.

Something just clicked inside Black Bat after that and instead of going back to Hong Kong, she decided to stay. It turns out, she actually loves what she does.

3 Ra's al Ghul's Half-Sister

Ra's al Ghul from DC Comics

The Architect wasn't the last supervillain Black Bat faced as she had to deal with another precarious situation that invoked some childhood memories. Everyone knows that Black Bat was once being trained for Ra's al Ghul but she left that life behind and wasn't willing to look at it again. Still, she was forced to when Red Robin was kidnapped by Ra's al Ghul's half-sister. Black Bat tracked Red Robin to a fighting tournament, where some unforeseen events took place.

2 Escape Plan

DC Comics

Red Robin aka Tim Drake found himself in a very tricky situation. He was on the verge of being harassed by Ra's al Ghul's half-sister when Black Bat intervened. She rescued Tim but she couldn't find a way out of the place where the tournament was happening. As a result, Cassandra had to improvise and she played the audience into thinking that she killed Red Robin with a knife. Black Bat won the tournament and amongst the chaos, Red Robin saw his opportunity to escape. What a genuine plan.

1 The Cricket

DC Comics

Black Bat has had some very tough face-offs against the weirdest and strongest supervillains but none more cunning than The Cricket. Red Robin and Black Bat were tasked to go to Hong Kong and they were to catch a 10-year-old assassin who went by the name of The Cricket. Black Bat and Red Robin took it lightly, thinking that The Cricket was just a kid, and as a result, they were quite easily defeated. Not only that, but they were humiliated by a 10-year-old child as he spared their lives and asked them to do better next time.
