Artist David Aja brings back an old comics format in Batman: Black and White #2: the daily newspaper comic strip.DC Comics publicist Clark Bull tweeted Friday, "I've been hoping for the revival of DC's newspaper strips for a long long long time and I'm finally getting it (I'm sure by coincidence!!) next week in Batman: Black & White #2 with 'The Devil is in the Detail' by David Aja. God bless editors [Ben] Abernathy, [Andy] Khouri and [Dave] Wielgosz."RELATED: David Aja's First Ever DC Story Arrives in Batman: Black & White #2

Accompanying the tweet is an image of two "daily" strips drawn by Aja, who is best known for his runs on Hawkeye and The Immortal Iron Fist for Marvel. They are dated Oct. 24 and 25, 1949 and formatted like the Batman comic strip distributed by the McClure Syndicate that ran in daily newspapers from 1943 to 1946. That first strip -- initially titled Batman and Robin -- had stories written by Batman co-creator Bill Finger, DC editor Jack Schiff, Don Cameron and Alvin Schwartz. It was drawn by Batman co-creator Bob Kane, Dick Sprang, Jack Burnley, Charles Paris and Stan Kaye. Kitchen Sink Comics collected the daily and Sunday run in 1990.

Batman: Black and White initially was a four-issue anthology in 1996 that showcased new stand-alone short stories featuring the Caped Crusader from top artists and writers. The second and third volumes collected backup stories from Batman: Gotham Knights with a few new tales. The book was revived again as a six-issue series in 2013 with all-new stories.

Batman: Black & White is a six-issue prestige miniseries that features a wide roster of comic creators delivering tales featuring Batman. Other creators attached to the miniseries include Batman: The Animated Series writer Paul Dini and Daredevil scribe Chip Zdarsky. Each issue of Batman: Black & White will feature a black-and-white cover as well as a variant spotlighting one of Batman's foes. Batman: Black & White #2 features a main cover by Jock, with variants by Doug Braithwaite and Kamome Shirahama.

Batman: Black & White #2 goes on sale Jan. 26th, 2021 from DC.
