Warning: The following contains spoilers for "I Am the Bat," by Bengal and Gabriela Downie, and " Legacy," by Nick Dragotta and Rus Wooton, in Batman: Black and White #3, on sale now.

Batman strikes fear into the hearts of criminals as often as he inspires hope in Gotham's citizens. because of that, the Dark Knight has a well-established legacy in Gotham City. And now, that legacy just got a little bit larger, as two new members were just brought into the Wayne family dynasty in a pair of stories from Batman: Black and White #3.

In "I Am the Bat," Batman patrols Gotham, fighting petty crime and monologing. While on patrol, the Caped Crusader muses about all of the values that his father instilled. Batman thinks about the difference between good and bad while taking down ordinary criminals.

At this point, it appears that Batman's supervillains are in hiding somewhere, as The Dark Knight prepares for them by fighting small-time thugs. At the end of the tale, Batman is revealed to be another child of Bruce Wayne.

While Batman's child gives him a more immediate impact, the next tale, "Legacy," depicts a long-term effect that Bruce Wayne provides. This new Batman fights inside of a giant mech suit, battling monstrous creatures in the middle of the city.  Batman's mech suit has some high-tech weaponry that destroys the massive monster hounding Gotham's citizens.

Moreover, this Batman looks out for the ordinary Gothamites who have been beaten down by this creature. The Dark Knight invades a secret fortress, which is housed by a group of elite citizens. The Caped Crusader is also greeted as a descendant of Wayne, just as the previous Batman was Bruce Wayne's child. Despite this wealthy heritage, the new Batman turns on the elite, leading a group of Gothamites on a raid against this fortress.

Both of these new Batman show just how far Bruce Wayne's legacy will extend. Batman has plenty of adoptive family members, such as Dick Grayson or Tim Drake. Yet it seems that Bruce Wayne's biological descendants will play a big role in honoring the original Batman as well.

The child of Bruce Wayne speaks to this sense of legacy throughout the story. The new Batman wishes to honor Bruce, acting in the same manner the original Dark Knight would. Additionally, Bruce's child speaks a lot about being prepared, keeping the city safe and keeping the police honest, much like the original Batman.

Looking far into the future, the Batman of "Legacy" maintains Bruce's core traits as well. This Batman uses the same kind of high-tech gear that Bruce would use, including the mech suit, which resembles the tank in The Dark Knight Returns.

Bruce's descendant also stands up against corruption in the same manner as Bruce Wayne. Both use their wealth for benevolent purposes, taking down those who would walk over the less fortunate.

These two new Batmen add to the legacy Bruce leaves behind in Future State. While Tim Fox is the next Batman, heroes like also Nightwing and Robin continue on in Bruce's honor. Even when he is presumed dead and the magistrate have taken over Gotham, people are inspired to fight on in Batman's name. The network of heroism that Bruce inspired continues on, with or without him. Without this Bat-Family, the Batmen of the future likely wouldn't exist.

Even in the present day, Batman has cultivated a large family of heroes, from Barbara Gordon to Cassandra Cain. Citizens, relatives and adoptive children have all been inspired by Bruce to protect Gotham. The two futures seen in Batman: Black and White only indicate how far this legacy will spread, carrying on for generations.
