By the time that Batman Beyond begins, Bruce Wayne has already been through the wringer as Batman, and has aged substantially since the last time fans or Gothamites have seen him. While it’s easy to imagine that the old Bat didn’t have much left in him after training Terry to take on the mantle of Batman, it’s actually quite the opposite.

In fact, not only does Bruce continue his crusade against crime in Gotham by acting as Terry’s ‘Man-In-The-Chair,’ but he’s also taken to the streets on more than one occasion.

10 Reunited With Many Members Of The Bat-Family

Though fans of the series have yet to see many of Bruce’s old protégés, including Tim Drake (with the exception of Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker & Future’s End), Jason Todd, Cassandra Kane, and many others, they have seen some of Bruce’s closest allies return to the Batcave.

Batman Beyond fans know Barbara Gordon picked up where her father left off and became the new Commissioner Gordon. Dick Grayson eventually became mayor of Bludhaven and has since had a daughter, Elainna (the New Batwoman). While Damian Wayne followed in his grandfather and mother’s footsteps by leading the League of Shadows.

9 Reunited The Joker

Joker alive in Batman Beyond

There are many in Gotham, including Bruce and all of his ex-protégés that had assumed they had seen the last of the Joker a long time before Terry ever took on the mantle of Batman. This, however, was simply untrue. When the Joker finally returns to Gotham, not only does he set his sights on the Jokers, the new Batman and Robin, but also on Bruce himself.

Though the Joker eventually succumbs to old age before doing any real harm to Bruce or the new Batman, he does manage to leave the new Robin traumatized before making his final exit.

8 “Killed” Neo Gotham’s Robin

At a certain point in his crime-fighting past, a telekinetic implant was placed in Bruce’s mind that would one day cause him to lose his mind. It just so happens that this event doesn’t occur until much later in his life, and when it does, Matt McGinnis (Terry’s younger brother) is caught in the crossfire of the event and killed.

At least, that’s what Bruce would have Terry believe as Booster Gold shows up to send him back in time to fix the fatal mistake.

7 Sent Terry Back In Time To Meet His Own Father

As it turns out, what really happened is that Bruce had been going through some of Warren McGinnis’ old journals and discovered that as a young boy, Warren was saved by a Batman wearing the Batman Beyond suit. This event would eventually inspire Warren to become the whistleblower at Powers Technology and would cost him his life while saving many more.

Bruce knows that this version of Batman had to be Terry as he had not even developed the suit by this point in time. So, naturally, he “kills” Robin and sends Terry back in time to save his father, ensuring that one day he will give his life for the greater good.

6 Sends Terry Into The Past To Save The World From His Own Invention

There is another version of the Batman Beyond future, one where Bruce Wayne and Mr. Terrific develop an artificial intelligence called Brother Eye that is designed to protect humankind from any threat. However, as these things often do, Brother Eye decides that it would rather just control all of mankind and goes the world domination route instead.

This leads Bruce to send Terry back in time to stop himself and Mr. Terrific from ever bringing the system online. What he didn’t expect though was that the calculations would be incorrect from Terry and leave him stranded in the past, five years after Brother Eye had already been brought online.

5 Bruce Reveals The Real Moment That Broke The Bat

Fans of the animated version of Batman Beyond were told that Bruce Wayne’s last day as Batman came when he was too physically weak to stop a group of thugs. In his desperation, Bruce does the only thing he can to make it out alive: picks up a gun. However, the comics tell a very different story of Bruce’s last case.

Having made some alterations to the Batman Beyond suit, Bruce takes on not one, but four Banes -- named after the iconic Batman villain and using the same super-strength venom. While he himself is too weak to take on these foes, his new and improved suit picks him up when he shouldn’t have been able to stand, and keeps him fighting to the very end, nearly killing all of the Banes as Bruce fought to stop the suit. This, Bruce later tells Terry, was Batman’s last case.

4 Got Barbara Gordon Pregnant... While She Was Still Involved With Dick Grayson

Fans of the Batman Beyond series are generally aware of the fact that by the time Terry finds Bruce Wayne and takes on the mantle of Batman, Bruce has more or less pushed away everyone in his life that meant anything. But the question on many fans’ minds was just how this happened. Well, in the ultimate act of betrayal to Dick, Bruce not only sleeps with Barbara but impregnates her as well. To make matters even worse, Dick and Barbara were still an item when this happened.

Though Barbara does lose the baby, her relationship with Bruce is forever tainted. As for Dick, well, throwing down with Bruce is never a good idea no matter how hurt one might be. This one act costs Bruce his relationship with two of his closest friends and allies.

3 Bruce Trains A New Robin

Matt McGinnis as Robin in Batman Beyond

Fans of Batman Beyond know that Bruce stayed spritely enough in his old age to train a new Batman to take up his crusade against injustice in Gotham, but there are some out there that are unaware of the fact that he also trained a new Robin.

When Terry’s younger brother, Matt, eventually discovers that Terry is Batman, he can’t help but want to join in the fight. While most members of the Bat-Family, both new and old, disagree with it, Bruce actually begins training Matt to take on the role of Terry’s Robin.

2 Sees Catwoman Return To Gotham

For Bruce, it had been quite a while since he had seen or heard from many of his previous foes. However, there is one old acquaintance that will likely always hold a special place in his heart, and that acquaintance is Catwoman.

Like many in Neo-Gotham who seem to be inspired by the city’s colorful past, the daughter of Danton Black, better known as the villain Multiplex, would be so inspired by Catwoman, she would eventually take on the mantle herself. Unlike the previous Catwoman, however, this version had superpowers, the ability to make up to nine copies of herself to be precise.

1 Helps To Defeat Hush... Again

Much like Catwoman and Joker, another villain, Hush, couldn’t stand to be outdone and just had to make another appearance in the Beyond era and face off against the new Batman. Though this version of Hush turned out to be a failed clone of Dick Grayson, created by Amanda Waller in order to “preserve” the legacy of Batman.

This failed clone began to have a deep and passionate hate for Bruce Wayne and Batman for not deeming him worthy of taking on the mantle of The Batman and would eventually begin a campaign of violence all throughout Neo-Gotham.
