The following contains major spoilers for Batman: Beyond the White Knight #5, on sale now from DC Comics.

Blight, the green skeletal foe of Terry McGinnis from the Batman Beyond cartoon series, makes his debut in Sean Gordon Murphy's White Knight universe in Batman: Beyond the White Knight #5.

The reveal comes as a trapped Bruce Wayne is confronted by Derek Powers, the scheming CEO of Powers Technology and Blight's alter ego. Accompanying Powers is Terry McGinnis, who wears the futuristic Batman Beyond outfit and has been working for the dangerous businessman as a personal assistant for much of the series, unaware that Powers is responsible for the murder of his father, Warren McGinnis.

Derek Powers transforms into Blight

After Bruce reveals this information to Terry and shows the seventeen-year-old a flash drive with information pertaining to his father's death, Terry unleashes a flurry of Batarangs into the nearby military tech surrounding everyone, intending to create an explosion as a diversion. He gets his wish -- but one of the Batarangs also breaks a vat of green gunk near Powers, dousing the corrupt CEO. Likely a liquid form of the deadly nerve gas developed by Powers, the gunk instantly begins melting away at his skin, transforming him into a morbid, translucent skeleton that glows with radioactive energy.

Blight's Television Origin

Blight experienced a similar transformation in the Batman Beyond cartoon after he was exposed to nerve gas. Capable of surviving severe amounts of radiation, Blight bore a resemblance to the classic Batman villain Doctor Phosphorus and swore vengeance on Terry McGinnis for ruining his plans and turning him into a metahuman. Blight was also able to hide his skeletal condition by wearing fake cosmetic skin that would disintegrate if he became too emotional.

Aside from showing the genesis of Blight, Batman: Beyond the White Knight #5 continues Bruce Wayne's unique interplay with the artificial intelligence embedded in his mind that assumes the role of Jack Napier, Joker's non-homicidal personality. In a Freaky Friday-esque body swap halfway through the issue, Jack takes control of Bruce's physical frame while the aging crimefighter suffers a panic attack.

Batman: Beyond the White Knight #5 is written and illustrated by Murphy, colored by Save Stewart and lettered by Andworld Design. The issue features additional variant covers by J. Scott Campbell and Sabine Rich, and is on sale now from DC Comics.
