The Batman: Matt Reeves Confirms Andy Serkis as Alfred

The Batman director Matt Reeves just confirmed that Black Panther star Andy Serkis will play Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming film.

Reeves announced the news on Twitter with a GIF of Serkis high-fiving fans on a red carpet. "And here comes Alfred!" he wrote, with a bat emoji for added measure. The confirmation follows last week's report that Serkis was in talks for the role.

Serkis joins a cast that includes Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravtiz as Catwoman and Paul Dano as the Riddler. He will play the devoted butler of Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne.

Serkis is no stranger to the superhero genre, having worked on Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther previous to this casting. He worked with Reeves on the Planet of the Apes franchise, appearing in both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes as Cesar. He is perhaps best known for his role as Gollum in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films.

Starring Robert Pattinson, The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves, who will also produce alongside Dylan Clark. While casting is still underway, the film is scheduled to be released on June 25, 2021.
