Tim Burton's 1989 film revolutionized mainstream audience perceptions of Batman, as well as the potential of serious superhero films.

Three pieces of concept artwork from the iconic film are now available for auction at Heritage Auctions. The illustrations feature designs for the Batmobile, the Batcave and the Bat-plane. The description for the auction item reads, "These incredible drawings helped define one of the most recognizable cars in film history, and they additionally establish the look and feel of the Batcave and the Bat-Plane." The artwork was completed by David Russell, who has worked on storyboards for major films such as Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and The Wolverine. With regard to the current state of the concept art, Heritage Auctions states, "They show very little handling wear, and the condition overall is Very Good."

In addition to Russell's artwork, several pieces of storyboard art featuring the Joker are available. The description of Joker's storyboard panels reads, "These drawings create not only a sense of dramatic timing but also a sinister mood." Finally, another collection of storyboard drawings featuring the Dark Knight facing the Clown Prince of Crime is available.

The film's success led to the release of several sequels, including Batman Returns -- whose artwork and storyboards are also up for auction -- and two more directed by Joel Schumacher.

Batman was the first entry in Warner Bros.' film franchise. It provided actor Michael Keaton with a more dramatic role than those he had played in the past and he was ultimately praised for his performance as Bruce Wayne. Alongside Keaton's Batman, the Tim Burton film also presented audiences with Jack Nicholson's famous portrayal of the Joker, which continues to be compared to later Joker actors such as Heath Ledger, Jared Leto and, more recently, Joaquin Phoenix.
