EXCLUSIVE: Batman #71 Makes a Major Change to the Bat-Signal

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Batman #71, by Tom King, Mikel Janina and Jorge Fornes, on sale Wednesday, May 15.

The Knightmares are over, but now Bruce Wayne has to deal with the ramifications of Bane's psychological attacks, and in Batman #71, he takes the first step... by overhauling the Bat-Signal.

It's a simple change, with the Dark Knight switching out the familiar golden bulb for a red one, but it gets under Commissioner Gordon's skin, which, to be fair, isn't that difficult for Batman to do right now considering the pair's frayed relationship. After all, even though Batman is convinced Bane has been attacking him form all sides, from Gordon's perspective, the massive villain is locked up in Arkham Asylum where he remains in the comatose state the Dark Knight placed him in.

However, the fact that Batman would risk angering his longtime ally even more by switching out the bulb, combined with the reaction Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, has to the news indicates this runs a lot deeper than a mere cosmetic change. A glance at the issue's solicitation copy and cover art reveals Bruce's Flashpoint father, the Batman of that temporary dimension, will take a more active role in the series' long-running storyline, and that version of the hero's costume does sort a bat-symbol set against a red background. It's entirely possible the Bat-Signal update is meant to send a message to his father, even though the elder Wayne has been working with Bane to tear his son down.

But that's just a theory. As for what the different hue really means, we'll have to wait a few more days to find out. Until then, you can check out CBR's exclusive preview of Batman #71, by Tom King, Mikel Janin and Jorge Fornes, below.
