A video from the set of Batgirl shows a scene between Michael Keaton's Batman and a young Commissioner James Gordon, played by JK Simmons.

The nighttime scene takes place under Kingston Bridge in Glasgow, Scotland, where Batgirl is currently filming. Featured is Simmons as a younger Gordon, seemingly reunited with his daughter -- a younger Barbara Gordon, who will later become the titular Batgirl. Keaton's Batman is only briefly seen in the video, but it is enough to tease a scene between the two characters in HBO Max's upcoming DC Extended Universe film.

The video comes after recent photos from the set of Batgirl showed another nighttime scene featuring Keaton, who portrayed the Dark Knight in 1989's Batman and Batman Returns in 1992, in his new Batsuit. Other set photos also revealed that Simmons had started filming his scenes as Commissioner Gordon in February. In an interview last year, Simmons revealed that Gordon will have a "significant" role in Batgirl, saying that he was "flabbergasted" when Warner Bros. asked him to return to the character after his appearance in Justice League.

Keaton's appearance in the DCEU film was teased in December 2021, before being officially confirmed when Batgirl star Leslie Grace, who will portray Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, welcomed the veteran Batman actor to the film. Previous behind-the-scenes photos from the Batgirl set revealed the character's new costume in murals displayed on Glasgow's Gotham City set.

Keaton is also set to reprise his Batman role in The Flash, alongside star Ezra Miller and DCEU Batman Ben Affleck. While it's unknown exactly what role Keaton's Batman will play in Batgirl, the actor recently spoke about being asked to return to the character for The Flash. "I thought, 'Boy, what would that be like?' And then, coincidentally, there were murmurs, and I got a call from Warner Bros. They wanted to talk to me about something and there were hints of Batman," Keaton said. "It has to be good. There's no reason to do it if it's not good. It's not gonna really change anything."

Batgirl was first announced in March 2017 and it was confirmed in 2021 that co-directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah would take over the project with a script from Christina Hodson, who wrote for The Flash and Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

"With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham," producer Kristin Burr said in May 2021. "Christina's script is crackling with spirit. [Arbi and Fallah] have an excited and joyous energy which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I’m just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool."

Batgirl will premiere exclusively on HBO Max in 2022.
