Batman has been spotted on the Scotland set of Batgirl, with none other than Michael Keaton under the cowl for the first time since he starred in Tim Burton's Batman Returns.Four photos showing a nighttime scene being shot for Batgirl were posted to the Twitter account Batgirl Film News, with Keaton visible in each one wearing the classic mask and long cape of his Batman costume. Fans' excitement to see Keaton back in action was evident in the caption to the photo set: "EXCLUSIVE: 30 years later, Michael Keaton is still the goddamn #BATMAN!"RELATED: Batgirl Set Photos Welcome JK Simmons' Commissioner Gordon Back to Gotham

The casting of Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman for 1989's Batman marked a new era for the character, who had previously been depicted in live action by Adam West in the campy, lighthearted 1966 film. Keaton's take on Batman was a considerable departure from the previous tone, introducing darker themes and tragic events. Keaton originally intended to star in a third film in the series, Batman Forever, but left the role following creative clashes with director Joel Schumacher.

Keaton's involvement in Batgirl was revealed in December 2021, via a cast list for the film which surfaced online displaying his name alongside the other stars. This was following the news that Keaton will officially make his return to the Batman role in The Flash, set to premiere on Nov. 3, 2022. Reports that he would begin filming for Batgirl this month appear to have been accurate.

Although the new behind-the-scenes photos mark the first time he's been seen on the set, Keaton's new costume was revealed last month through murals at the filming location, promising a return to his classic look with just a few modest updates. Among the more notable differences is the way the mask frames the actor's face, and the insignia on on the chest of the costume blending in more smoothly.

Leslie Grace was chosen for the title role in Batgirl. Grace, who is best known for the 2021 film In the Heights as well as her successful music career, will play Batgirl/Barbara Gordon opposite the older bat-themed hero. So far, it's unknown what kind of relationship the two will have in the film.

Batgirl, starring J.K. Simmons, Brendan Fraser and Jacob Scipio along with Grace and Keaton, is currently set to hit both theaters and HBO Max in 2022.
