Batgirl star Leslie Grace, who plays main protagonist Barbara Gordon/Batgirl herself, has revealed the first full look at her comic book-accurate costume.

Grace shared a photo of herself sporting the Batgirl suit in a post to Instagram, captioning it with a quote from DC's Batgirl: Year One by Scott Beatty, Chuck Dixon, Marcos Martin, Alvaro Lopez, Javier Rodriguez and Willie Schubert. "I use their expectations against them. That will be their weakness. Not mine. Let them all underestimate me… And when their guard is down, and their pride is rising, let me kick their butts."

Grace's Batgirl costume is ripped right off the page, looking almost identical to the batsuit Barbara Gordon wore as the "Batgirl of Burnside" in the original DC comic books. The Batgirl of Burnside arc kicked off in Batgirl #35 by Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher, Babs Tarr, Maris Wicks and Jared K. Fletcher, which was published under DC's New 52 banner in late 2014. The issue brought with it a new suit, which put a modern spin on Barbara Gordon's original purple and gold crime-fighting attire and would go on to become a fan-favorite among readers.

It was first reported back in July of 2021 that Grace, known for her work in In the Heights, had officially been cast to portray Barbara Gordon in Warner Bros. and DC's live-action Batgirl film, which is scheduled to debut exclusively on HBO Max sometime this year. Set within the DC Extended Universe, the film sees Justice League alum J.K. Simmons reprise his role as James Gordon, Barbara's father and Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department.

Additionally, Michael Keaton, star of 1989's Batman and 1992's Batman Returns, is slated to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Prior to signing on for Batgirl, Keaton was already confirmed to be reprising his iconic role in another upcoming DCEU film, The Flash. Meanwhile, Doom Patrol star Brendan Fraser is slated to appear in Batgirl as the film's main antagonist, Garfield Lynns/Firefly. Production on Batgirl began back in November.

Batgirl was originally the brainchild of William Dozier, producer of the 1960s Batman television show, who wanted to introduce a new character as a female counterpart to Adam West's Batman. Dozier is credited as the co-creator of Barbara Gordon alongside DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz, writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.

The character made her first comic book appearance in Detective Comics #359 by Fox, Infantino, Sid Greene and Gaspar Saladino, which was originally published on Nov. 29, 1966 and is cover-dated as January 1967. Played by Yvonne Craig, Batgirl made her live-action debut several months later in "Enter Batgirl, Exit Penguin," the Season 3 premiere of the Batman TV show, which first aired on Sept. 14, 1967. An alternate version of Batgirl named Barbara Wilson was subsequently played by Alicia Silverstone in the 1997 feature film Batman & Robin. While she did not suit up as Batgirl, Savannah Welch played Barbara Gordon in the third season of Titans.

Batgirl is slated to debut on HBO Max in 2022.
