Leslie Grace shared a video of herself training to become Gotham's newest hero in Batgirl.

The actor shared a montage on Instagram of her exercise routine, including resistance training, weight lifting and boxing. The video is scored by the song "Pennies From Heaven" by Louis Prima. At one point a caption reads "Somebody call Nina Rosario," referencing Grace's character from In the Heights. The caption for the post reads, "soooo when do the superpowers kick in?"

Grace was announced to be playing Barbara Gordon / Batgirl in July of this year. "I open [an email] and it says, 'I'm Batgirl'… and my brain broke," the actor later recounted. "It was an incredible moment. When I say incredible, I mean the textbook definition of, I could not believe it. My brain actually broke when I got the news." Grace also expressed excitement about playing a Latina superhero on the big screen, saying the opportunity "validates the dreams of other people who look like me, who may feel it’s not an opportunity for them. I'm just really excited about every young girl who is going to see a Dominican Batichica and say, 'I can do that.' I can't wait."

Joss Whedon was originally attached to direct the film. However, that chair will now be filled by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, with a script from Christina Hodson. Producer Kristin Burr said of the project, "With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham. Christina's script is crackling with spirit. Adil and Bilall have an excited and joyous energy which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I'm just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool."

In addition to Grace, Batgirl will feature Brendan Fraser as the film's villain, "a disgruntled former firefighter," assumed to be Garfield Lynns / Firefly, as well as Jacob Scipio in an undisclosed role. The film will connect to other DCEU properties and will include J.K. Simmons reprising his Justice League role as Commissioner Jim Gordon. Batgirl will also feature an appearance from Batman himself, but the directors have kept mum on which iteration of the Dark Knight will show up.

Batgirl will release in 2022 on HBO Max.
