Batgirl star and DC Extended Universe veteran J.K. Simmons talked about the larger role his version of Commissioner James Gordon will play in the upcoming movie, compared to his smaller one in 2017's Justice League.

Simmons delved into the topic during an interview with A.frame, saying, "The tiny role that Commissioner Gordon played in Justice League was very businesslike and very, 'Let's see if we can stave off the end of the world!' What appealed to me about this movie was from Jim Gordon's point of voice, it's really more a story about him as a guy and as a father and not just about the guy who's turning on the Bat Signal and trying to keep the citizens of Gotham safe — although that's obviously also a part of the story. But it was a chance to delve into a different aspect of the character."

Simmons previously discussed Commissioner Gordon's role in Batgirl last year during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he stated that said role was "more significant." He also admitted to being "flabbergasted" when he was asked to play the character again by DC.

Jacob Scipio, Simmons' Batgirl co-star, recently gave bits of information regarding his currently unnamed part, noting, "Obviously, I have to pick my words quite carefully here because my tongue is pretty tied with it. But I can say that my character is in the comics. He wants to make Gotham a better place. And he's in a situation with Batgirl. Let's just say that."

As for the title character herself, leading lady Leslie Grace hinted to fans what they can expect from her portrayal of the Dominoed Daredoll. "...I will tell you this, Batgirl is a badass," Grace stated. "She's definitely going to be fighting lots of people. She'll be very hands-on. She's got a lot to prove." Grace also revealed what Batgirl will look like in the film in an Instagram post earlier this, which showed the actor in a comic-accurate costume.

Not much is currently known about the plot of Batgirl, though set photos have shown the costume of Brendan Fraser's Firefly and others featured a Wonder Woman 1984 Easter egg. Additionally, it has been rumored that the movie has cast Nightwing and will set up the Black Canary solo film, though there has been no official confirmation regarding either of these from Warner Bros.

Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Batgirl is currently expected to arrive on HBO Max some time in 2022.
