Fans hoping for a surprise appearance by Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will be disappointed, according to on of the film's producers, Sue Kroll.

“You’ll not see Batgirl,” Kroll said when speaking with Collider about the film. “Just gonna say ‘No.’” Kroll hints that the main reason Batgirl won't make an appearance is that there is already a solo Batgirl film in the works. For that movie, Christina Hodson will be penning the script.

Though Joss Whedon was once slated as director and writer of the Batgirl solo film, he has since dropped out. There is no official word on when and if production will begin on the film.

While Barbara Gordon fans won't see their favorite on screen, fans of another Batgirl will. Cassandra Cain, Gordon's successor to the Batgirl title, will be appearing in Birds of Prey. Although she won't be Batgirl in the film, Ella Jay Basco will be taking on the role of Cassandra Cain.

Directed by Cathy Yan from a script by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) stars Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, Ewan McGregor, Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, Francois Chau, Charlene Amoia, Chris Messina and Matthew Willig. The film is scheduled for release on Feb. 7, 2020.
