Brendan Fraser is set to play the main antagonist in Warner Bros. and DC Films' upcoming Batgirl movie.

According to Deadline, Fraser will reportedly play Firefly, though this has not yet been confirmed. The news comes shortly after reports of the film's casting call for a villain began to circulate.

The call described a character with a backstory similar to that of the classic comic book arsonist. It was reported earlier this year that Batgirl was looking for "an actor in his 50s-60s to play the Villain who is described as a disgruntled former firefighter." While it is possible that the film will present audiences with an original villain, the casting call suggests a character who is at least inspired by Firefly, if not an adaptation of the villain itself.

Firefly first appeared in 1952's Detective Comics #184, created by France Herron and Dick Sprang. He has gone on to appear in television shows, video games and more. While there have been many versions of the character and several different individuals who have borne the Firefly moniker, the supervillain generally possesses a flight suit with a flamethrower attached.

Batgirl was written by screenwriter Christina Hodson. It is being directed by directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah with Kristin Burr attached as producer. Starring as Barbara Gordon is actor Leslie Grace, who stated of her character, "Batgirl is a badass... She's definitely going to be fighting lots of people. She'll be very hands-on. She's got a lot to prove."

It was recently reported that Batgirl cast Bad Boys For Life breakout star Jacob Scipio in an as of yet unknown role. He will be joining Grace, Fraser and J.K Simmons, who is reprising his role as Commissioner Gordon from Warner Bros.' Justice League.

When it comes to other characters from around the DC Extended Universe, details are scarce. However, DC FanDome 2021 confirmed that a variant of Batman will appear in the upcoming film, though it's uncertain if this Batman will be Ben Affleck's, Robert Pattinson's or a new iteration of the dark knight. It's worth noting that Pattinson's The Batman is not a part of the DCEU.

Arbi previously teased, "I can say that it's really Batman Batman." In the same interview, Fallah added, "But who, we can't say." When asked if the actor in question was someone who had played Batman before, including the likes of Christian Bale and Val Kilmer, Arbi said, "I don't think we're allowed to go into that much detail."

Batgirl has not yet received a release date.
