Batman and his crime-fighting family are the protectors of Gotham City who have a number of tools at their disposal, from high-tech gadgets to bulletproof body armor, but as their job also requires quite a bit of detective work, their intelligence becomes one of the strongest weapons in their arsenal.

And while their trained intelligence and detection skills make them a greater threat than most of the criminals they face in Gotham City, how do they stack up against the rest of the Bat-Family when placed into a battle of the brains to see who is the smartest detective in the Batcave?

10 Jason Todd/Red Hood

DC Comics Red Hood Batman

When Jason Todd first joined the Bat-family as the second Robin, he stood out from the rest of the Robins due to his unbridled passion for the job and questionable tactics that ultimately left him dead at the hands of The Joker.

Todd's training was unfinished, and while he sought out new masters to become the dangerous Red Hood after his resurrection, his lack of proper schooling and training under the Batman keep him low in the rankings when compared to the rest of the team – despite his proven deadliness.

9 Helena Bertinelli/Huntress

Huntress Swinging Into Action

The Huntress had to fight and scrape for her place in the Bat-family after her debut in Gotham City, as Batman didn't approve of Helena Bertinelli's violent methods or desire for vengeance, which mirrored his own but lacked the restraint he had taught himself over the years.

Huntress has proven that she can hold her own in Gotham and has successfully worked her own cases, but she often requires the help of her allies when more in-depth detective skills or computer tricks are required.

8 Stephanie Brown/Spoiler

Stephanie Brown Spoiler

Stephanie Brown is the daughter of the criminal Cluemaster, which inspired her to become the heroic Spoiler so she could stop her father's crimes before he hurt anyone. She soon became allied with the Bat-family and began a relationship with Tim Drake.

Stephanie even briefly took on the role of Robin and Batgirl, though her time as both was short-lived. Stephanie is a brilliant detective with enhanced computer skills, but she hasn't benefited from as much of Batman's training as the other members of the Bat-family and still has a lot to learn.

7 Duke Thomas/The Signal

Duke Thomas the Signal

The Signal is one of the newest members of the Bat-Family. Duke Thomas first appeared in the New 52 era of comics where he proved himself as one of Alfred's street-level Robins before Batman brought him on to the team officially. However, Thomas was not given the role of Robin as Batman was hoping to try something different by making Duke an agent during the day.

The Signal has a genius-level intellect that he trained as a child during Gotham's Zero Year to deal with Riddler's clues. This later allowed him to figure out the secret identities of some of Batman's team before he joined, which is something only a small group of people have been able to deduce.

6 Dick Grayson/Nightwing

Nightwing

When Dick Grayson first appeared as Robin the Boy Wonder, he quickly carved out a name for himself as more than just Batman's partner. And while he spent years learning from the best, he also spent more time training and learning on his own to eventually become Nightwing and even Batman himself when needed.

Grayson is one of the few members of the Bat-family with enhanced education as he finished school and went to college to study criminology, earning an advanced degree in forensics. However, Grayson has become such a well-rounded crimefighter due to his years of training and experience that his increased intelligence doesn't immediately stand out when compared to his allies.

5 Kate Kane/Batwoman

Kate Kane as Batwoman

Batwoman first appeared in Gotham City during the 52 weekly series which revealed Kate Kane as the new hero, though it took her a bit of time to find her place among the rest of the Bat-family as she preferred to work alone.

Kate is another character with a genius-level intellect that was further trained and tempered by her time in the military, and her investigative skills were specifically enhanced by organizations like the FBI, the DEO, her militaristic father and his Colony, as well as her cousin Batman, who put Batwoman in charge of his young team of heroes in the Rebirth era.

4 Damian Wayne/Robin

Damian Wayne Robin DC Comics

The son of Batman has somewhat of an advantage over the rest of the Bat-family, as Damian Wayne was raised using experimental techniques developed by his mother Talia al Ghul and the League of Assassins which sped up his aging and force-fed required knowledge.

Damian then spent a few years training alongside the league to become one of its most gifted assassins before he had even met his father and taken on the role of Robin. Damian's tactical skills and intelligence are only hampered by his inexperience and youthfulness. As he gets older his intelligence will continue to grow.

3 Bruce Wayne/Batman

Batman Annual 1

While he may be best known for his deadly combat skills and intimidating presence, Bruce Wayne's training to become the best crime-fighter he could be included learning about criminology, forensics, psychology, escape artistry, and other tricks of the trade.

He used this knowledge and his own dedication to become the world's greatest detective, and he designed and invented many of his original tools and gadgets that he used as Batman before he enlisted Lucius Fox and Wayne Enterprises – though his brilliant tactical mind still ranks him higher than most of his allies.

2 Tim Drake/Robin

Robin Young Justice

One of the first people to ever deduce Batman and Robin's secret identity was young Tim Drake, who was a fan of Dick Grayson's acrobatic career before his family's death, which helped him determine that Dick was also Robin, which he further tracked back to Bruce.

After he earned the role of Robin, he spent time training with some of the same people who trained Batman before he began fighting crime. His deductive skills are already considered on par with his mentor by both Ra's al Ghul and Batman, but he still has the potential to grow more.

1 Barbara Gordon/Batgirl

Batgirl Oracle

Barbara Gordon is the most learned member of the Bat-family as she excelled in academia well before she joined them as the first Batgirl, eventually earning a Master Degree of Laws from Harvard University.

However, it's her evolved eidetic memory that really makes her brain a powerful weapon, as she is able to recall exact moments and details from her memory perfectly. This skill, combined with her advanced computer knowledge and brilliant tactical mind made her the Bat-family's information broker as Oracle and the original brains behind the Birds of Prey.
