All season long, Team Flash has contended with the speedster Savitar. To viewers he's looked like a CGI monster, but "Flash" tradition dictates that the season long big bad secretly be someone we know. The first trailer from the next episode of "The Flash" definitively reaffirms the big reveal of last night's episode; namely, Savitar's identity.

It turns out Savitar has been Barry from the far future. Some may be surprised, some may have guessed this already, but this seems to put debates as to who the season's villain is to rest. As a result, it's Barry vs Barry in the upcoming episodes, only one of them is really creepy looking. Future Barry sports a terrible haircut and more disturbingly, mottled scars covering half his face.

That's not all going on in this episode. Cisco reasons that future Barry knows everything that the Flash knows, and thinks it's a good idea to mess with their Barry's memory. This being Cisco, things go wrong, and the team needs to deal with a comically amnesiac Barry Allen. Will he get his memory back in time to fight his future self? The trailer doesn't say, but I'm sure you've got a pretty good guess.

In the wider scope of things, this sets up some other elements of the CW superhero continuity. We know that in the future, Eobard Thawne hates Barry Allen, so much that it causes him to come back in time and set the story of "The Flash" in motion (no pun intended). A future-based, evil Barry Allen who becomes a villain makes a lot more sense as the object of Thawne's hatred than the well-intentioned Barry we all know and love. Thawne has also gone on to menace the Legends of Tomorrow, so his motivation is still very important to the larger story.

Starring Grant Gustin as the Scarlet Speedster, “The Flash” airs Tuesdays at 8 pm ET/PT on The CW. The series also stars Jesse L. Martin, Tom Cavanagh, Carlos Valdes, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Keiynan Lonsdale and more.
