The 71st Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is legendary for having been a bit of a disaster, with several popular characters -- including Arthur, Big Bird, The Pink Panther, Spider-Man, The Cat in the Hat and Barney -- getting destroyed or damaged during the parade. Although the event was twenty-one years ago, you can now watch Barney getting destroyed. The video, which comes from @TanookiKuribo on Twitter, shows Barney's famous accident from start to finish. The crowd cheers and yells as the wind tosses the purple dinosaur around the street and into a lamppost, which rips the side of the beloved children's character open. The video ends with the NYPD stabbing the balloon. The caption reads, "Here's raw footage of the Barney balloon getting destroyed in the 1997 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade..."RELATED: Line it is Drawn: 2018 Thanksgiving Leftovers Week!

The video clearly shows how powerful the wind was at the event, with reports indicating speeds of up to 43 miles per hour. Although the Barney accident is entertaining, the disaster that was the 1997 parade resulted in several injuries when The Cat in the Hat knocked over the top part of a lamppost. Following the event, New York instituted stricter rules regarding safety at the event.

Barney was the lead character on Barney & Friends, which ran on PBS from 1992 until 2009. A revival of the show was announced in 2015, though there's currently very little information on it.
