Created by Andreas Heckman, Arne Nolting and Jan Martin Scharf, Barbarians stars Laurence Rupp as Arminius, Jeanne Goursaud as Thusnelda, David Schütter as Folkwin Wolfspeer, Daniel Donskoy as Flavus and Barnhard Schütz as Segestes. Barbarians is a German-language historical drama series and a fictional retelling of the rebellion of the Germanic tribes in AD 9 against the Roman Empire, led by Arminius. The series follows Arminius (Rupp), a member of both the Roman Imperial army and the Germanic Cherusci tribe, who was given away to the Romans as a child along with his brother Flavus (Donskoy). After witnessing the crimes committed against his tribe by the Romans, Arminius unites the Germanic tribes and incites a rebellion, culminating in the Battle of Teutoburg Forest.

Premiering on Netflix in October 2020, Barbarians was renewed for a second season shortly after its premiere in November that same year. Like the first season, Season 2 will consist of six episodes of about 45 minutes in length, with Stefan Ruzowitzky serving as showrunner and Lennart Ruff directing. Barbarians became the most popular German Netflix Original series shortly after its release on the streaming service.

Barbarians is among several international shows receiving a second season at Netflix. During Netflix's Geeked Week, several Season 2 renewals were announced, including Japanese sci-fi hit, Alice in Borderland, and a teaser for the South Korean zombie-apocalypse drama, All of Us Are Dead. Netflix also officially renewed another popular South Korean drama series, Squid Game, for a second season as well. "As the writer, director and producer of Squid Game, a huge shout out to fans around the world," said Squid Game creator in a statement released alongside a Season 2 teasr. "Thank you for watching and loving our show."

Season 2 of Barbarians will premiere on Netflix in 2022.
