WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batman #104, by James Tynion IV, Ryan Benjamin, Danny Miki, Bengal, Guillem March, David Baron, and Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

Ever since 2011's New 52 relaunch, Barbara Gordon was reestablished as the one and only Batgirl in Gotham City. However, all of that changed during the recently concluded "Joker War." When the Clown Prince of Crime attacked, Batman called in the entire Bat-Family to save the city. During the fight, Barbara once again assumed her duties as the tech-oriented Oracle to coordinate the rescue efforts, while Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain both added the Bat emblem to their respective Spoiler and Orphan costumes.

Steph and Cass were both Batgirl all but in name, just as Barbara toyed with taking up Oracle identity once more. Now, in Batman #104, Spoiler and Orphan all but make their transition to being Batgirls official, and they give Barbara an unofficial new codename: Batgirl Prime.

In Batman #103, Barbara Gordon helped Batman take on the mysterious Ghost-Maker from behind her monitors. But now, in Batman #104, Batman has disappeared. She calls in Nightwing to come help and dispatches both Stephanie and Cassandra to figure out where the new villain might have taken the Caped Crusader.

When Steph and Cass both figure out that Bruce is being held at Arkham Asylum, they contact Barbara, referring to her as "Batgirl Prime."

Barbara, of course, initially objects to the name. "I don't think we've had that conversation, Spoiler," she answers. However, Stephanie argues that if there can be several Robins, then there should be more than one Batgirl, too.

The two don't have the chance to continue their conversation beyond that point, but it raises an interesting question. It's true that there are multiple Robins, and both Cassandra and Stephanie have decided, without really consulting anyone, that they are Batgirls as well. And that would make Barbara the original Batgirl in modern continuity, so the Batgirl Prime moniker makes sense, even if it's just an honorary title.

For the time being, it's unclear if Barbara's codename will stick, but it's definitely possible. Barbara isn't just going back to Oracle; she's not just that person anymore. She can be both Batgirl and Oracle, without taking away from either Cassandra or Stephanie. In the upcoming DC Future State event, Cass and Steph will go by 'the Batgirls.' Since this is already what Steph calls the two of them in Batman #104, it's likely Barbara's status as Batgirl Prime will also take.

What's more, this is also similar to another potential future DC previously showcased. In 2014's Batgirl: Futures End #1, there was now a League of Batgirls which included Stephanie, Cassandra and Tiffany Fox --and they all answered to Barbara. It seems like both Future State and Futures End are similar in that regard, and it sure looks like the present is shaping up to put the pieces in place for such an outfit.

For now, Barbara hasn't made any decisions about taking these younger heroes fully under her wing, but it sure seems like Gotham City will be home to its very own team of Batgirls very soon.
