With giant anthropomorphic animal costumes and perpetually grinning faces, The Banana Splits were always mildly unsettling.

Now, The Banana Splits Movie is amping up that creepiness exponentially by turning the classic Hanna-Barbera band into murderous monsters.

In the trailer, one family's trip to see a taping of the Banana Splits' show takes a gruesome turn after the robotic members of the band begin terrorizing and torturing their studio audience.

While this unlikely Warner Bros. Home Entertainment film won't have a theatrical release, it will be released on Blu-Ray and digital this summer before making its television debut on SyFy later this year.

Before the Splits took this dark turn, the Banana Splits were the stars of The Banana Splits Adventure Hour, which ran on NBC from 1968-1970. After a short-lived revival, the Banana Splits also teamed up with the Suicide Squad in one of DC and Hanna-Barbera's crossover specials last year.

Directed by Danishka Esterhazy, The Banana Splits Movie stars Dani Kind as Beth, Finlay Wojtak-Hissong as Harley, Romeo Carere as Austin, Steve as Mitch, and Sara Canning as Rebecca. Bingo, Fleegle, Snorky and Drooper will also appear. The film is written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas.
