Baldur's Gate 3 might see some changes down the line after recent updates to Dungeons & Dragons.

Larian creative director and founder Sven Vincke spoke with GamesRadar+ about the upcoming full release of Baldur's Gate 3. They discussed how updates to the famous TTRPG, such as Dungeons & Dragons' removal of the term "race," might impact the game moving forward. "We're keeping up with the changes being made to D&D. Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't necessarily adhere to all of the current rules – we make changes along the way as it makes sense for a video game, or based on feedback from our players," he explained. "Since we're still in production, we're likely to pick up some of the recent changes to D&D rules, too."

Updates to Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 has seen multiple updates since it launched for early access in October 2020. Many of its early changes involved basic bug and stability fixes, making gameplay smoother. Eventually, Larian began adding additional classes to the game, expanding from its starting lineup of Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Warlock and Wizard to include Paladins and Druids. A ninth patch also added the ability for players to use they/them pronouns for their characters and raise their level to five.

Dungeons & Dragons developer Wizards of the Coast recently revealed it had canceled five video games based on DnD. Two games came from Otherside Entertainment and Hidden Path Entertainment separately, while a third saw development at an internal studio and code-named Jabberwocky. Two additional titles at external studios remain unknown. Baldur's Gate 3 planned launch in August remained intact, and a spokesperson for Wizards of the Coast noted that the company remained "committed to using digital games in the future."

The WotC spokesperson also stated that the company "made some changes to our long-term portfolio to focus on games which are strategically aligned with developing our existing brands and those which show promise in expanding or engaging our audience in new ways." How these changes could impact Baldur's Gate 3, if at all, remains unconfirmed.

Besides recent patches and updates, Baldur's Gate 3 also revealed new casting news. A fan-favorite character from the series, Minsc, was previously voiced by veteran voice actor Jim Cummings. Larian announced in a series of comedic skits that actor and Critical Role Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer would take over the role in the third installment.

Baldur's Gate 3 launches in full sometime in August 2023.
