After years of rumors and licensing rights moving between companies, Baldur's Gate III is finally confirmed to be in development.

Set within Dungeons & Dragons' Forgotten Realms world, Larian Studios has released a teaser trailer for the third installment in the popular PC fantasy role-playing game franchise, just ahead of this weekend's Electronic Entertainment Expo convention. Larian Studios is best known for releasing Divinity: Original Sin 2, a popular fantasy RPG released in 2017.

While the teaser trailer doesn't reveal any gameplay footage, it does show an insidious new threat arriving in the Forgotten Realms as a soldier succumbs to what appears to be a Lovecraftian evil in full, graphic detail, with the medieval city he's guarding apparently wiped out.

Set within the fantasy worlds of Dungeons & Dragons, the first Baldur's Gate was released in 1998 and launched a full sequel and five spinoff titles. The franchise would help expand Dungeons & Dragons to PC gaming while establishing original developer Bioware as one of the leading video game companies specializing in RPGs.
