A week after the first image surfaced of Jimmy Smits from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” we now get a look at his character Bail Organa in action in a clip from the standalone film. Well, if by “action” you mean arching an eyebrow.
The franchise veteran stands silently in this sequence as Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso makes a case for taking the fight to the Galactic Empire. “What chance do we have? The question is what choice!” she argues. “Run, hide, plead for mercy, scatter your forces. You give way to an enemy this evil, with this much power and you condemn the galaxy to an eternity of submission.”
We’ll have to wait to see whether the former viceroy of Alderaan and Galactic Senator has anything to say in response. However, it should be noted that Smits cautioned he only had “a small part” in “Rogue One.”
Smits was introduced as Organa in 2002’s “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones,” and reprised the role 2005’s “Revenge of the Sith,” where he adopts the infant Leia and takes possession of C-3PO and R2-D2. The character was killed when the Death Star destroyed Alderaan in 1977’s “Star Wars.”
Directed by Gareth Edwards, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is set just before the events of that film, as a band of unlikely Rebels undertakes a dangerous mission to steal the plans for the Empire’s new superweapon. Opening Dec. 15 in the United Kingdom and Dec. 16 in the United States, the film also stars Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.
