"Mean Girls" and "Freaky Friday" director Mark Waters has been tapped to direct and produce "Bad Santa 2" for Miramax and Broad Green Pictures.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Billy Bob Thornton is returning as the Bad Santa himself, alongside stars Tony Cox and Brett Kelly as Marcus and Thurman Merman, respectively.

The "Bad Santa" sequel comes from a script by freshman writer Johnny Rosenthal, Doug Ellin ("Entourage") and Shauna Cross ("Whip It"). Geyer Kosinski is producing, alongside Waters, and executive producers Gabriel and Daniel Hammond ("Green Room"), Jessica Tuchinsky ("(500) Days of Summer"), Zanne Devine ("Easy A") and David Thwaites ("Black Swan").

"Bad Santa 2" is slated for a holiday season 2016 release.
