A television spinoff of the buddy-cop film franchise Bad Boys is in the works, starring Gabrielle Union.

She'll reprise her role from 2003's Bad Boys II as Special Agent Sydney “Syd” Burnett, the sister of Detective Lieutenant Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and love interest of Detective Lieutenant Mike Lowrey (Will Smith). The series would follow Union's adventures as an undercover operative for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Deadline reports the untitled project originated from producer Jerry Bruckheimer's 2.0 Entertainment and Primary Wave Entertainment, which also manages Union. The actor's schedule opened up following the announcement that her BET series Being Mary Jane will end next year.

The Blacklist writers and producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier will pen the script. Union's manager Jeff Morrone and Jeff Gaspin are executive producers.

Smith and Lawrence starred in the 1995 action-comedy Bad Boys and its 2003 sequel Bad Boys II as best friends and detectives in the narcotics division of the Miami Police Department. Michael Bay directed the previous two installments in the Bad Boys franchise. A third film, titled Bad Boys For Life, has a targeted Jan. 12, 2018, release date.
