Turtle Rock's upcoming cooperative FPS Back 4 Blood will require an internet connection at launch, according to the studio. The news was delivered through Twitter when the development company was asked whether or not Back 4 Blood will allow for offline play with AI teammates. Turtle Rock Studios responded by stating that, while it's looking for ways to support offline play in the future, the game will require an internet connection to play when the game releases on Oct. 8, something that the company was previously criticized for at the initial release of their co-op shooter Outriders.RELATED: New Back 4 Blood Trailer Shows off Zombie Slaying Crew 'The Cleaners'

The news may come as a disappointing surprise to fans of Turtle Rock's prior game franchise, Left 4 Dead, which allowed for not only offline play, but split-screen co-op -- which Turtle Rock also specified will not be included at launch (though they'd "love" to support the feature in the future). Given that Back 4 Blood is a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead, many fans were under the impression it would follow in its footsteps. Regardless of the mandatory internet connection, fans will still be able to play solo with three other AI players -- they just won't be able to do so offline. Ultimately, fans will need to wait and see how Turtle Rock plans to implement the feature in the future.

Developed by Turtle Rock Studios and published by Warner Bros Interactive, Back 4 Blood releases October 12, 2021 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC.
