The following contains major spoilers for AXE: Judgment Day #4, available now from Marvel Comics.

The war between the Eternals and mutantkind has introduced all manner of threats to the Marvel Universe, all of which are seemingly remiss of any ways to be successfully defeated. Luckily, there is one method of attack which the Prime Eternal Druig and his followers have taken for granted, and their enemies are more than capable of taking advantage of it. Not only have the X-Men just become one with the Uni-Mind, they've proven that it doesn't even need to be wielded as a weapon to do some serious damage.

AXE: Judgment Day #4 (by Kieron Gillen, Valerio Schiti, Marte Gracia, and VC's Clayton Cowles) finds the mutant heroes of Krakoa preparing for their next best shot at staving off the threat posed by the Eternals, while Druig similarly prepares for his next attack against them. As Druig unleashes the Uni-Mind upon Krakoa once more, the Eternals such as Ikaris who stand against him make sure that it won't do any lasting harm. By shutting down the security measures that keep the Uni-Mind sealed off from outsiders, Ikaris and Gilgamesh allow the X-Men the opportunity to join the Uni-Mind for themselves. Thus, they are able to take away every ounce of power that Druig has amassed without spilling a single drop of blood.

axe judgment day 4 not just a weapon

First seen in 1977's Eternals #12 by legendary artist and creator Jack Kirby, the Uni-Mind is the result of a group of Eternals joining their minds and spirits into one astoundingly powerful entity. Typically, the Uni-Mind can only be called upon by the Prime Eternal, and appears as a massive, near-eldritch being made entirely of blinding lights and pulsing energies. In previous years it has been used to stave off all manner of threats, hold secret meetings, and even return depowered Eternals to their former glory, though none of these are its greatest strength.

When confronted by the Eternals who have turned on him, Druig is quick to point out that their presence in the Uni-Mind only makes it easier for him to exert his will upon them. By bringing the X-Men into the fold, however, the act of stripping Druig of his title as Prime Eternal is an effortless one. The Uni-Mind isn't just a gathering of minds, but the cornerstone of the Eternals' democracy. By their very presence alone, the X-Men and their fellow mutants are all given the same vote that the Eternals are entitled to, and a new Prime Eternal is chosen who will belay all of Druig's efforts.

axe judgment day 4 welcome to the uni-mind

As exciting as it is for the X-Men to join the Uni-Mind courtesy of the Eternals, it isn't something that is likely to happen again. At least, not in this exact manner. Apart from being welcomed into the Uni-Mind by Druig's dissenters, the X-Men have no innate connection to either the Eternals or their occasionally collective consciousness. Then again, Krakoa's heroes probably don't need the Eternals to form a Uni-Mind of their own if they ever decide it is worth the effort.

The idea of the Uni-Mind might be synonymous with the Eternals, yet it is not something they have always had, but rather an ability they developed. It wasn't until they were all killed and subsequently resurrected by the experiments of Kronos that the Eternals were able to form the Uni-Mind, and even then it was almost entirely by accident. Assuming there comes a day when mutantkind is in need of a Uni-Mind of their own, the likes of Jean Grey and Emma Frost could absolutely provide them the framework for it at the very least.
