Catwoman has been around for a very long time. In fact, she made her infamous debut in Batman #1 in 1940 as a jewel thief and femme fatale. Since then, Selina Kyle has become one of the most important characters in the Batman mythos. How important? Well, in just a few months, Catwoman is going to marry Batman after a long courtship that has seen the two characters on again and off again, chasing each other from rooftop to rooftop and occasionally getting a little naughty on the Gotham City skyline. The love story between these two is one for the ages.

But before her engagement to the Bat, Catwoman spent quite a few years getting herself into awkward situations. Whether it be in the comics or in the movies, creators have made plenty of questionable choices concerning the Cat. From cleaning herself like a cat and becoming obsessed with catnip to trying to eat a live bird and making out with the Man of Steel, there are plenty of cringe-worthy moments in Catwoman's history. And let's not even get started on all of Catwoman's crimes against fashion! CBR has collected 15 moments that Catwoman probably regrets to this day:

15 HALLE BERRY CATWOMAN

Halle Berry as Catwoman

Catwoman from 2004 is the reason why DC's most infamous villainess hasn't starred in any movies recently. Besides a supporting role in The Dark Knight Rises, Warner Bros. producers haven't dared revisit Catwoman on screen. We don't blame them -- or rather, we really do for thinking that anything in this awful Halle Berry vehicle was a good idea. This movie may just be the worst thing to happen to the Batman universe on the big screen since Batman & Robin.

Berry plays an unbearably campy version of Catwoman who acts more cat-like than you ever expected. There's even a god awful scene where she encounters catnip and starts sniffing it uncontrollably in front of another character. It is so bad. There's really no redeeming quality in this joke of an action-thriller except that it probably means no one will ever make such a terrible Catwoman movie again.

14 CATWOMAN "VS" BATMAN

batman catwoman

To watch Michelle Pfeiffer on the big screen as Catwoman in Batman Returns is to never forget her turn as the feline thief clad in a crude leather suit. When director Tim Burton set out to make a sequel to his 1989 smash hit, Batman, he did it under one condition: that he could make the movie he wanted to make. That meant he'd have more creative control and could make a Burton movie, not a Batman movie.

The result was one of the most controversial Batman movies to date. Of course, a big part of why Returns was so scandalous at the time is Pfeiffer's portrayal of Catwoman. Not only is she a bit insane throughout the movie, but she has a fondness for the Dark Knight that we hadn't quite yet seen in the movies up to that point. She even licks him in one scene. Yeesh.

13 CATWOMAN VS BIRD

Catwoman and penguin

As if licking Batman wasn't enough, Catwoman also sticks a bird in her mouth as if she's about to eat it. It's one of the most horrifying moments in Batman cinema history and Michelle Pfeiffer plays the scene with pure relish. You can even hear the bird crying in Catwoman's mouth as she rubs her belly and pretends to eat it in front of the Penguin. She only lets the bird go -- it frantically flies out of her mouth -- after Penguin threatens to kill a cat with the blade in his umbrella. Bizarre stuff.

If the sensual tone of the movie wasn't enough to worry parents who took their kids to watch the movie on opening weekend, the feigned animal cruelty surely did the trick. Warner Bros. got into a bit of trouble for this movie. Concerned parents weren't happy with the "adult" nature of the story.

12 THAT OTHER ROOFTOP SCENE

catwoman batman rooftop new 52

While DC's New 52 era was very kind to Batman -- under the care of the brilliant creative team of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo -- the same can't be said about Catwoman, who was basically portrayed as an "intimacy junkie" every chance Judd Winick and Guillem March got. It's evident that their run isn't interested in portraying the character as a powerful woman equal to Batman from the very first issue. Luckily, current writer Tom King has done a much better job of that.

Batman and Catwoman get it on rather quickly in Catwoman #1 and the scene is described in gratuitous detail, as the Bat and Cat rip into each other like the wild animals they represent. It's pretty racy stuff that sets back the portrayal of female characters in comics by quite a bit, especially for Catwoman, who had enjoyed a few great runs just a few years prior.

11 CHASING TAIL

Batman-Catwoman-Chasin-Tail-T-Shirt

Superhero t-shirts are great. We have tons of them. But this t-shirt is another thing entirely. In fact, the shirt has a play on words that the modern Catwoman probably wouldn't love. "Night time is the right time for chasin' tail!" the shirt reads, like it's a panel out of an old Batman comic from the '60s or '70s. (We can totally believe this play on words is from an old comic!) Either way, this shirt is definitely going to raise some eyebrows at Comic Con.

The shirt shows Batman leaping forward, presumably on Catwoman's... er, tail. In the background is the feline villainess herself, in her first official Catwoman costume (she was only known as "The Cat" in her earliest appearances and wore a furry cat mask). Clearly, she's having a laugh as Batman tries to catch her.

10 SANTA CLAWS

Catwoman Cosplay

This cosplayer is bringing lots of cheer to Catwoman this year with a take on the character we've not quite seen before. It's good ol' Santa Claws, of course! Not only is the name one for the pun hall of fame, but the costume itself is a very creative way to change the Catwoman look up a bit. The cosplayer was actually inspired by fan art she first encountered on Tumblr of a Christmas-themed Catwoman enjoying a winter evening with Batman, who has dressed up as... Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It's definitely a look.

The details that make this Santa Claws distinctly Catwoman are all there: the black eyeliner, black lipstick and the whip -- the Cat's signature weapon. Surely, she wouldn't leave home without it, even when giving out present and holiday cheer.

9 THE CAT AND THE SPIDER

Catwoman and Spider-Man Cosplay

Gianluca, an Italian artist and photographer, loves to snap pictures of cosplayers at nerd conventions. What should he encounter at one of these cons but a familiar Cat hanging out with a beloved Spider. Marvel says that Avengers: Infinity War is the greatest crossover event of all time, but we present to you the picture above. Spider-Man has his own Cat to worry about over in the Marvel Universe and Catwoman is about to marry the Bat, but that's not stopped these two from a little flirt in the sun.

This picture has left us wondering what it would be like if these two crossed paths in the comics. Better yet, what if Catwoman and Black Cat faced off in the greatest feline crossover in history? One thing's for sure: Black Cat would probably have a thing to say about where Spidey's putting his hand in the picture above.

8 THE TASER KISS

Catwoman Taser Kiss in Batman Returns

Things get a bit... extra at the end of Batman Returns. Not only has Penguin hatched a plan to kidnap all the kids in Gotham and murder them in order to avenge his own fate as an orphan unloved by his parents, but Catwoman's out for blood. She finally has a chance to face off against the man who created her and she's not about to let him get away. Underneath the Gotham City Zoo, all of the freaks meet for one last dance.

Batman defeats the Penguin, but not before Catwoman and Max Shreck's story comes to a shocking end. Literally. Catwoman decides to give Max the kiss of death. After he unloads his gun on her, Catwoman proves that she has nine lives by going in for the kill. She puckers up and gives Max a kiss with a taser, which electrocutes the both of them.

7 CATWOMAN #0

Catwoman 0

Guillem March had a pretty notable run as the artist on Catwoman in the early days of the New 52. It wasn't notable for awe-inspiring pencils, though -- unless you count the anatomical miracle needed for Catwoman to pull off the pose in the picture above. His run will always be remembered as the one where Catwoman was basically an object for the benefit of the male gaze, a sexualized character who would break her own back to strike the right pose for the cover of Catwoman #0.

We don't really have to point out what the emphasis is in the cover above, right? It's clear where the art wants your eyes to go. After the solicitation for this issue came out, many fellow comic book artists panned March's art, pointing out that it would be anatomically impossible for the Cat to pull off this pose.

6 CATWOMAN KISSES SUPERMAN

Catwoman and Superman Kiss

There's probably a reason Batman didn't want to talk to Superman about marrying Catwoman back in Tom King's Batman #36. Not only was Bruce worried about what Clark would say when he told the Man of Steel that he was planning to marry a villain, he probably knew about Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane #70-71 in which the Cat plants a big smooch on Supes. She even thinks it's "DEE-LISH!" according to the thought bubble above her head.

Catwoman describes her kiss with Superman as "the cat's meow." Things get a bit silly in these issues of Lois Lane, but what you need to know is that the Cat and the Man of Tomorrow have a history, if only a brief one. But the past is the past... right?

5 THE UGLY COSTUME PHASE

Catwoman Ugly Costumes

Catwoman wasn't always clad in black. In fact, she's spent most of her criminal career in a myriad of questionable costumes that are quite different from the Cat's signature leather jumpsuit. Selina's first Catwoman costume was a bit literal, but we'll get to that in a second. Her early appearances were dominated by a purple dress with a green cape -- a very weird color scheme for a cat-themed villain. There was also the weird black leotard with light blue stockings look.

She also had a green suit at one point. (Why does DC insist on the color green for a cat?) Then there was the black catsuit with the whiskers. Catwoman's even had a tail once or twice for... reasons? Thankfully, Catwoman has ditched the crazy colors and whiskers in recent years.

4 THE TERRIFYING CAT HEAD PHASE

Catwoman Cat Head

Selina Kyle wasn't actually "Catwoman" in her introduction in Batman #1. That came a little later. In her earliest appearances, she was simply known as "The Cat" and it probably had to do with her disguise of choice --  a catsuit you might more closely associate with a horror film. Selina dawned the terrifying cat mask, complete with fans and whiskers, in order to steal precious pearls and other treasures.

It's one thing to dress up as an old lady to steal things, but Selina takes "catwoman" to a whole new level here. The villain eventually switched to the purple dress with a green cape. We're not sure if that costume was actually better, but at least it wasn't as horrifying as her life-like Cat People disguise.

3 LADY OF THE NIGHT

Catwoman as a Sex Worker

Catwoman has had several different origin stories throughout her almost 80-year history. From orphan to a flight attendant who hit her head and turned to crime, there are many versions of Catwoman's backstory. At one point, she was portrayed as a woman working as an escort (of sorts). As you can see in the panels above, DC wasn't shy about showing this side of Selina Kyle, who was first portrayed as a lady of the night in Frank Miller's Batman: Year One.

Miller's always been one for gritty storytelling and his change to Selina's origin seems to have stuck because it's made several appearances in continuity since the '80s. Whether or not this origin story still stands is anyone's guess, as recent comics featuring the character have mostly ignored this particular aspect of her past.

2 CATWOMAN CHEATS ON HARVEY DENT

Catwoman Cheats on Harvey Dent

Things get awkward in Batman: The Telltale Series, a video game that puts you in the shoes of both Batman and Bruce Wayne, tasking you with balancing both lives. When Batman meets Selina Kyle as both the Caped Crusader and as his best friend Harvey Dent's girlfriend, it's the start of a love triangle with some very deadly ramifications. After Harvey suffers an accident that permanently scars his face, Bruce and Selina grow closer, eventually spending a night together after a bit of crimefighting.

Neither expected Harvey to come to Selina's door the morning after Batman and Catwoman's first night together. When Harvey discovers that Selina has left him for Bruce, he breaks into a fit of rage, the first signs that Two-Face is taking control of his mind. Things get a bit messy from here.

1 CATWOMAN CLEANS HERSELF

Catwoman Cleans Herself in Batman Returns

Batman Returns really does take the cake for awkward Catwoman moments. When she's not busy licking Batman's face, trying to eat a bird or kissing Max Shreck with a taser, Catwoman likes to take a breather and practice some self-care. Of course, "self-care" means licking yourself like a cat in front of the incredibly weird Penguin, who loves watching the show. This might be the most peculiar moment in Catwoman's big screen history.

Forget sniffing catnip for what feels like five minutes, Catwoman is washing herself like a cat. This just goes to show that the '90s and early '00s didn't quite have a good handle on the Catwoman character. To some, Anne Hathaway's portrayal in The Dark Knight Rises is much closer to the character from the comics.
