For most of her existence, the Wasp has been a socialite, although she has also shown her mettle as the leader of the Avengers more than once. However, in the mid-'90s, there was a short time where Wasp was turned into a barely-human wasp-creature from 1995 to 1996.

The Avengers were in the midst of the controversial storyline known as "The Crossing." This infamous event revealed that Tony Stark had secretly been a villain the entire time and worked as a mind-controlled mole for Kang the Conquerer. In Avengers #393 by Terry Kavanagh, Mike Deodato Jr., Tom Palmer, Frank Lopez & Janice Chiang, the Avengers battled the now-evil Iron Man. In the fight, Iron Man blasted his repulsor rays at Hercules but hit Wasp. As she fell to her apparent death, Tony Stark finally completely snapped before disappearing into a portal.

The New Wasp and Goliath

Hank Pym tried to cure Janet by exposing her to the same chemicals that gave her powers but something strange happened: she ended up in a cocoon. In the next issue, Kang's warrior Neut attacked the Avengers, and , Wasp came out of the cocoon and saved her teammates with a powerful stinger blast during a subsequent battle. The new Wasp sprouted wings and developed an almost alien appearance. When Hank ran some tests on her, he said she was in perfect physical health, better than she had ever been, except for the fact that she was no longer completely human.

Despite this, Wasp was still Janet Van Dyne, with the same personality and even stronger powers than before. The battle in "The Crossing" took a turn for the unexpected when the Avengers brought a teenage Tony Stark into the future to help them and Wasp, with her increased powers, leveled the playing field. By the time Tony Stark sacrificed himself to save his former teammates, it was time to move on, and that included a new version of Wasp. However, this new version of the Wasp would only last for a few months until the "Onslaught" crossover.

Wasp transformed

A new supervillain known as Onslaught was born out of Professor X and Magneto, and it threatened to destroy the world. The Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men were unable to beat it until most of them sacrificed themselves. Wasp was one of the superheroes who flew into Onslaught to attempt to end the threat.

While they all appeared to die, they all returned and were drastically changed in "Heroes Reborn." This was a pocket universe where Franklin Richards saved all of these heroes. When he brought them there in 1996's Avengers #1 by Rob Liefeld, Jim Valentino, Chap Yaep, Jon Sibal, Marlo Alquiza, Ashby Manson, Extreme Color & Steve Dutro, Jan was reverted into a human again, and the Wasp's entire change into a mutated wasp lasted only 10 months.
