The following contains spoilers for Avengers #66 from Marvel Comics.

Mephisto kills an entire army of his own variants and then transforms himself into a giant, grotesque Celestial-like creature in Marvel's Avengers #66.

Avengers #66 comes from writer Jason Aaron, artist Javier Garrón, color artists David Curiel, Morry Hollowell, Erick Arciniega and Rachelle Rosenberg and letterer VC's Cory Petit. In the issue, the demonic Mephisto is still trying to find a way to thwart Earth's Mightiest heroes even though the Multiversal Masters of Evil have so far been unable to do so. Stepping away from the battlefield, Young Thanos begins taunting Mephisto by telling him his plan to rewrite all of history was nothing short of a failure. "You plan on sticking around to take on all those teams of Avengers by yourself? There are certainly easier ways to commit suicide," Young Thanos continues. While it may have been a sarcastic remark, Mephisto laughs to himself admits that may be a "fine idea" before taking his leave.

Mephisto then appears before the Council of Red, a massive assembly of Mephisto's many variants from across the multiverse. The Council of Red -- whose numbers have vastly dwindled after fighting with the Avengers -- expresses their displeasure with Earth-616's Mephisto and attempt to sentence him to death; however, Earth-616 Mephisto beats them to the punch and begins murdering them all one by one.

Using the corpses of his dead variants, Mephisto begins siphoning the energy from their universes and uses it to transform himself into a giant, unsightly beast who re-enters the battle and quickly takes down a Helicarrier. Earth-818's Tony Stark/Ant-Man sends an urgent message to an ultra-powerful Loki variant called Avenger Prime warning him about the dire situation and comparing the giant-sized Mephisto to a Celestial.

The Avengers Welcome New Recruits for Their Greatest Battle Ever

Luckily, Earth's Mightiest Heroes get a few last-minute recruits as Galactus and Ka-Zar come flying in to save the day, with the former of the two being named an honorary Avenger. Gorilla-Man and URSA Major also show up with an awakened Avengers Mountain, which says it wants to be called "Deathlok" now," and the issue ends with everyone gathering for one last final charge. The "Avengers Assemble" event continues with Mar. 15, 2023's Avengers Forever #15 before concluding on April 19, 2023, with Avengers Assemble: Omega #1.

Avengers #66 features cover art by Garrón and Curiel and variant cover art by Alex Ross, Federico Vicentini, Marcio Menyz, Stefano Caselli, Federico Blee and Dan Hainsworth. The issue is on sale now from Marvel.
