Home to the Mighty Thor as well as his allies and family, Asgard is one of the most powerful realms in the entire Marvel Universe. But while it has largely been an ally to Earth in the core-Marvel Universe, there are other realities across the multiverse where Asgard and Midgard ended up going to war -- with dire consequences.

What brutal fates awaited two versions of the Marvel Universe that ended up actually going to war with Asgard?

SHIELD VS ASGARD

In S.H.I.E.L.D. #12 by Mark Waid and Joe Bennett, a possible future was introduced where the forces of Asgard ended up turning their full fury towards Midgard, Earth. The Scarlet Centurion, having traveled through space and time, turned his attention to the Asgardian Gods. He arrived in the past, and struck Odin from behind, killing the All-Father. Coming to the conclusion that the Scarlet Centurion had been of Earth, the Asgardians waged war against Midgard -- with the first brutal assault resulting in the deaths of almost all of Earth's superpowered defenders at the hands of the Asgardians. Even both Thor Odinson and the Mighty Thor -- aka Jane Foster after proving worthy to lift Mjolnir -- fell in this battle, dying for Earth against the Asgardian hordes.

Ultimately, the fate of the world falls to Phil Coulson and his fellow Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., who are able to sneak into Asgard thanks to a debt that the Keeper of the Bifrost Bridge Heimdel owed Coulson. Now wielding the final weapons of the fallen heroes, the Agents prove to be capable warriors and hold their own against the forces of Asgard, even defeating the Warriors Three as they try to make their way into the realm to sue for peace. However, they end up being brought back in time to the exact moment the Scarlet Centurion attacked Odin. With their help, Odin was able to survive the assassination attempt -- sparing Midgard the war that would have otherwise wiped it out and restoring the timeline.

TIMESLIP

In Timeslip: The Coming Of The Avengers Special by Jim Krueger and Matt Smith, a radically altered version of the Marvel Universe was brought to life, where the events of the Marvel Universe occurred differently. This includes the fate of Thor, who had been sent to Earth by his father in the guise of Donald Blake. Coming to appreciate his new home and becoming committed to his role as a doctor alongside Jane Foster and Hank Pym, Blake never found the staff that was secretly a disguised Mjolnir and remained on Earth for years as a mere mortal -- enraging his father and prompting him to try and wipe out the humanity his son had come to love. Ushering in a new ice age across the world, countless millions froze to death in the storm.

Odin eventually brought Thor back to Asgard by force, and Thor learned the truth of Midgard's fate from Loki. Thor was able to convince his father to give Earth one last chance to prove itself -- a tournament, wherein he and other champions could fight Asgardian warriors to prove the mettle of Midgard. Returning to Earth, Thor ended up assembling a uniquely bizarre roster of Avengers to fight alongside him, including this world's versions of Charles Xavier, Jean Grey, Matt Murdock, Jack Hart, Curt Conners, and Samuel Smithers -- aka the Professor Xavier, Marvel Girl, Daredevil, Jack of Hearts, Lizard, and Plantman of this reality.

All but Jean join Thor as this world's version of the Avengers. Forced into combat against the Asgardian Champions, the Avengers earn a mix of successes and defeats -- with Daredevil, Planetman, and Jack of Hearts victorious in their battles against Balder, Hogun, and Hela, while Xavier and Lizard both fall to their enemies. But as the tournament rages on Earth, Loki leads the Ice Giants to Asgard and destroys it in one fell swoop. Asgard falls to Earth, but from the wreckage, a new alliance between Asgardian and humanity is struck. In the remains of New York City comes New Asgard, protected by Thor and his Avengers.
