In Winds of Change, I spotlight retcons that I think should be implemented, like how I think Apocalypse should have been behind Wolverine getting his adamantium.

Last week, I did an article about the changing nature of Scarlet Witch's powers over the years. After the article went up, there was some discussion with readers about the Scarlet Witch's current state as a non-mutant and whether it should continue and honestly, I agree that they should just have her become a mutant again.

When we first met Scarlet Witch in X-Men #4 (by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Paul Reinman), she was blatently a mutant since she was part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Her "hex powers" had her cause "bad luck" for people she did not like, but it seemed as though it was just marked by her making bad things happen for her enemy...

Like here, she just caused something bad to happen to the Angel...

Eventually, long after they stopped being villaind and joined the Avengers, we learned that Scarlet Witch and her brother, Quicksilver, were the children of their old Brotherhood of Evil Mutants boss, Magneto.

We learned it in a very clever way. First, in Avengers #186, Bova explains to Pietro his and Wanda's origins...

At the same time, over in X-Men #125, we are given the following, to sort of reward readers who read both X-Men AND Avengers that they now know something the characters themselves didn't know, that Magneto was the father of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver...

This did not last long, though, as soon the "hidden" truth was no longer hidden, as Magneto found out in the first Vision and Scarlet Witch miniseries...

Oddly enough, this is all the "proof" he gives for him being their dad...

The issue ends with the following...

That remained the status quo until Avengers/X-Men: Axis #7, where Rick Remender, Adam Kubert and Edgar Delgado reveal that Magneto is NOT their dad. Scarlet Witch and a number of heroes and villains had their personalities "inverted," so the now-evil Scarlet Witch decided to punish Dr. Doom for taking advantage of her during the Young Avengers mini-series Children's Crusade. Magneto and Quicksilver try to save Doom and that leads to this...

Remender then followed that up with Uncanny Avengers (Volume 2), where he and Daniel Acuna revealed in Uncanny Avengers #4 that the twins were actually the result of the High Evolutionary doing experiments on regular kids...

James Robinson, though, later clarified matters when he revealed in Scarlet Witch #1 (of her shortlived ongoing series) that Wanda comes from a line of witches...

We learn that her mother actually once went by the name the Scarlet Witch and that there has been a Scarlet Witch (or a Scarlet Wizard) for centuries.

Okay, fair enough, but she really should just be a mutant again, as well.

Well, think about it. In House of M #7, Wanda literally re-wrote all of reality to erase mutants from the world (Doctor Strange used his powers to slow her down, so he protected roughly 1,000 mutants from being wiped out, but millions of them lost their X-Gene)...

This briefly made it so that she, Magneto and Quicksilver were all no longer mutants.

However, think about it, she flat out USED HER REALITY ALTERING POWERS to make it so that she was not a mutant anymore.

How, then, can we possibly believe anything that has happened since then? The comics say that Magneto is no longer her dad and that she and Quicksilver are no longer mutants, but couldn't that just be a case of residual effects of Scarlet Witch using her own reality-altering powers?

We all know that the REAL reason Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver stopped being mutants is because they were going to be used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and as part of a deal between Marvel Studios and Fox, the MCU was not allowed to use mutants (or say that they were the kids of Magneto), while Quicksilver appeared in the X-Men films as the mutant son of Magneto.

Once that happened, Marvel figured that it should just make that change in the comics, as well.

Now that Disney owns Fox's movie studios, though, that isn't an issue anymore.

So just reveal that Scarlet Witch used her powers to alter reality so that she and Quicksilver were no longer mutants and then have reality altered back so that they are both mutants and Magneto's kids. We can keep Robinson's retcon and just have it be that Magneto is their father and the witch lady is their mom. Magneto's wife had left him, after all, so he was out there single for a while becoming a great geneticist somehow, so he could have easily met and had sex with their mom.

So just get it done, Marvel! Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver NOT being mutants doesn't really serve any purpose.

Okay, that's it for this installment! If you have a suggestion for a retcon that YOU'D like to see, drop me a line at brianc@cbr.com!
