In 2015, Marvel reinvented Scarlet Witch. After years of putting her through the wringer with things like House of M and "Avengers Disassembled," it was time to bring her back to the forefront as a hero and more than just a tragic instigator.

Among other things, it was revealed that Scarlet Witch was no longer the biological daughter of Magneto. In Scarlet Witch #3 by James Robinson, Steve Dillon, Frank Martin, Chris Visions & VC's Cory Petit, Wanda Maxomoff made it her mission to cure all the broken witchcraft, and she went to Ireland because she believed it was destroying the country. What she couldn't have expected to find was her birth mother, Natalya Maximoff, on the Witches Road.

Scarlet Witch and her mother

When Scarlet Witch first appeared, she was a villain working alongside Magneto. Her origin soon changed to have her and her twin brother Pietro revealed to be Magneto's children. That ended up being revealed to be a lie, and it was revealed that they were orphaned on Wundagore Mountain and that Magneto was not their father. Wanda learned that her mother was a woman named Natalya Maxomoff, at one time as Scarlet Witch, meaning Wanda's superhero name was actually passed down through her family.

In this specific introduction, Wanda realizes that the curse destroying Ireland was due to a witch that fell years before, and the only place to find this was on the Witches Road. In her solo series, Wanda traveled there, with the ghost of Agatha Harkness joining her. When they entered, they met Natalya, who identified herself as the Scarlet Witch. It turned out that Agatha always knew this, but kept it from Wanda until the time was right. Natalya disappeared in the next issue and was gone until Wanda began to speak about her mother to her psychiatrist. As Wanda said, she at one time thought she was the daughter of a Romani woman and a man, but that was not true. She thought she was a mutant, but that was also not true, as she had recently learned that the High Evolutionary modified their powers. She would soon learn that the person she believed to be her father, Django, was, in fact, her uncle and Natalya's brother. While the psychiatrist was actually the Ringleader and was manipulating Wanda, he gave her great advice. He told her to find out more about her mother, setting Wanda on the most important journey of her life.

Wanda eventually went looking for the truth about her mother. She started her journey by finding the minister who gave her and Pietro's location to the High Evolutionary, a minister who said they were witch's children and deserved it. Natalya Maximoff went to find her children and died fighting the High Evolutionary's warriors. Her desire to save her twins caused the High Evolutionary to return them to Django and Marya Maximoff to raise, keeping them in their family. Natalya found Wanda during this search and told her that she had to return to the Witches Road and walk it to the end if she wanted to fix witchcraft.

Natalya set Wanda on a mission to find her destiny, and Agatha Harkness came along for the journey. That is when Natalya showed up and gave her daughter some advice before disappearing again. Natalya sent Wanda to find the Goddess of All Witches, bound by Chaos, explaining the broken witchcraft on Earth. The three witches teamed, and Natalya even summoned her son Quicksilver to help in the final battle with Chaos. Then, Natalya made the ultimate sacrifice.

So her daughter could live, and to save witchcraft, Natalya gave her soul to the Goddess of All Witches and sent her daughter back to the real world while also bringing Agatha back from the dead. However, she let Wanda know that the High Evolutionary didn't do this to them and that Wanda's birth-father was responsible, leaving the mystery open for the future.
