SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Avengers: No Surrender #675 by Mark Waid, Al Ewing, Jim Zub, Pepe Larraz. The issue goes on sale January 17, 2018.

Marvel Comics continues to gear up for its 16-part weekly event Avengers: No Surrender. Today, the publisher released the first 13 pages of the story, offering a free taste of what's to come. The gist is, Earth has been stolen, and it's up to virtually very Avenger ever to work together to solve the mystery. While this unfolds, they'll also deal with Thanos' Black Order and the new Lethal Legion.

The sneak peak is missing both villainous groups, but we are introduced to the cataclysmic event at the story's core. We also catch up with Avengers past and present, including Lightning (formerly Living Lightning), Beast, Nadia Pym and the Avengers' butler, Jarvis. The last two are out on a mission to restock the Avengers Mansion pantry when the citywide destruction takes place.

Springing into action, Wasp gets to work saving a group of bystanders. This being her first "all hands on deck" event as an Avenger, Nadia is rightfully terrified. Putting on her game face to perform her superhero duties, Wasp is able to save a few civilians from falling debris. One child isn't as lucky, however, and is on the verge of getting crushed. Jarvis heroically rushes in and aides the young boy, pushing him out of the way.

Unfortunately, the last image in the preview is of an apparently lifeless Jarvis crushed under rubble, as the Wasp calls out to her mentor.

Is Jarvis Really Dead?

Avengers: No Surrender pulls no punches, attacking the heart and soul of Earth's Mightiest Heroes with Jarvis' death. Of course, fans will question whether Jarvis is really dead, or merely injured. However, his limp hand and its grey hue points to the Avengers' butler not surviving the opening attack.

Surprisingly, the powerless Avengers butler has dodged lady death's cold embrace for decades. The only time the character died was in the alternate Ultimate Universe. That time, the Black Widow revealed herself to be a traitor and shot Jarvis in the head. However, with the "No Surrender" solicitations regularly teasing major deaths, it appears his fate may be sealed.

The death of Jarvis immediately proves no character is off limits in this Avengers event; any of our favorite characters could perish at a moment's notice. His passing will hit Nadia extremely hard, as Jarvis had taken the newest Avenger under his wing as the two developed a father/daughter relationship. What this means for her typically upbeat attitude remains to be seen and will likely be explored in the months ahead.

With Avengers: No Surrender releasing weekly, we shouldn't have a long wait to discover Jarvis' final fate. (May he rest in peace.)
