WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Avengers: Mech Strike #2, from Jed MacKay, Carlos Magno, Guru-eFX, and Cory Petit, on sale now.

Avengers: Mech Strike has plunged Earth's Mightiest Heroes into despair as they're struggling to cope with the rising threat of the biomechanoids. These are giant, kaiju-sized beasts that consume matter and become tech-beast hybrids. In short, they're the Avengers' worst nightmare, and Avengers: Mech Strike #2 reveals that more and more are popping up across the globe at an alarming rate.

However, the Avengers have a bigger problem at hand besides these titans, as their home base has been turned into a destructive monster by their most sinister villain, Kang.

Their base, Avengers Mountain, has been the shell of the Progenitor, the first Celestial that came to Earth. Four billion years ago, he fell to Earth and died after being infected by the Horde. His corpse remained in the Arctic Circle. But after the Avengers defeated the Final Host of the Dark Celestials, the resurrected First Celestial Host raised the Progenitor from the icy waters. It was given to the heroes as a gift, with Wakanda and Alpha Flight's technicians then turning it into a marvelous headquarters that could house many of Tony Stark, Black Panther and Asgard's weapons.

Now, that's set to bite the Avengers as Stark and T'Challa have been played by one of their most genius opponents. They're trying to figure out the code on the first memory core they pulled from a biomechanoid, but they're hitting a wall. When a piece is deciphered, it releases Kang the Conqueror. The iconic Avengers nemesis has been sending these creatures back, and their ever-growing number aggravates the Avengers to no end.

As he reveals the full truth to Stark and takes out Black Panther, Kang admits that the Avengers played directly into his hand by plugging a memory core plugged into the Avengers' base so that he could infect Avengers Mountain with the virus.

This now allows him to mutate the Celestial, just as Iron Man realizes the danger that's been unleashed on Earth. Their mech-suits may be compromised too, and Stark knows they might not have the firepower to bring it down.

The biomechanoids can absorb and convert tech, which is why the Avengers are using his customized suits. But with Kang free once more and in control of his own monstrous Celestial, a lot more firepower will be needed. Kang might even access the other weapons and make them his own, so Iron Man has to come up with a new plan fast, especially as the other Avengers are busy with their own fights. But if Kang truly unlocks the power of the Progenitor, the Avengers may end up facing the most powerful Celestial ever on their home turf.
