WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Avengers #33 by Jason Aaron, Javier Garron, Jason Keith and VC's Cory Petit, available now.

Mjolnir, the trusty hammer of Thor, is one of the most iconic weapons in the entire Marvel Universe. From its long-accepted origins to its reputation as only those deemed worthy enough to wield it being able to even lift the mythical hammer. While everyone from Captain America to Jane Foster and Beta Ray Bill has taken control of the hammer over the years, Mjolnir usually falls in the hands of someone working alongside the God of Thunder.

When the Avengers are targeted by a familiar face in Avengers #33, Thor learns the shocking truth about his hammer as it falls in less than noble hands.

According to legend, the hammer was forged from the rare Asgardian metal Uru within the heart of a dying star, and it was enchanted by Odin so that only one who is worthy can wield it and the powers of the Norse God of Thunder. There have certainly been periods where the Odinson has not been worthy enough to pick up the hammer, from his wayward youth during the Viking Age to the shocking twist within Original Sin. Despite that, Mjolnir eventually comes back to Thor, most recently at the end of the recent crossover event War of the Realms.

Armed with the hammer, Thor confronts Moon Knight who has brutally been targeting the magical members of the Avengers for his new dark mission for the Ancient Egyptian God of Vengeance Khonshu.

Moon Knight Mjolnir Moon Rock

With Moon Knight unwilling to stop his rampage, Thor hurls Mjolnir right at the lunar-themed superhero, only for Marc Spector to stop the hammer in its tracks. As an astounded Thor watches on, Moon Knight explains that Uru is made of trace elements from the previous universe before the Big Bang. More specifically, Moon Knight explains that the metal Odin used to forge the hammer was derived from moon rock of the long-dead universe. As an avatar of Khonshu drawing his strength and abilities directly from the moon, Moon Knight is able to take control of Mjolnir for himself with his mind.

In command of the Asgardian hammer, Moon Knight completely pummels Thor with his own signature weapon, without any amount of discernible physical effort. After enduring a brutal beating, Moon Knight then knocks the God of Thunder clear across the cosmos while claiming the hammer for himself. Now armed with the magical abilities of several of the most prominent superheroes in the Marvel Universe and in control of one its most iconic weapons, Marc Spector has truly transformed into a force to be reckoned with as he continues to serve Khonshu's whims.

Moon Knight Mjolnir Avengers

Separated from Mjolnir once again, it is unclear where Thor is exactly stranded and how he will return to the fight but, without his trusty hammer, he is certainly in dire need of support. Although Thor appears to have the cosmic upgrades he recently received in Donny Cates and Nic Klein's Thor run, the Asgardian Herald of Galactus was still soundly beaten with his own weapon.

Even though he's always been one of Marvel's more grounded heroes, Moon Knight is systemically working his way through Earth's Mightiest Mystical Heroes, and it could be some time before the heroes get enough breathing room to rescue the God of Thunder from the Vengeance of Khonshu.
