WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Empyre #5 by Al Ewing, Dan Slott, Valerio Schiti, Marte Gracia, & VC's Joe Caramagna, on sale now.

From his first appearance to his latest adventure, Iron Man has always been dedicated to building armors. Over the years, he's designed hundreds of suits for every task imaginable, even some for his heroic allies. But his newest one might just help save the world, and it easily his most flexible yet.

And in Empyre #5, Iron Man reveals that his newest suit isn't actually for him. As an alien invasion and an alien doomsday weapon both threaten Earth with simultaneous threats, Mister Fantastic suits up in Stark's latest armor to save the world.

Iron Man has been in a bad place since the ending of Empyre #1. With the revelation that he and the rest of the Avengers had been fooled into helping the Cotati aliens wipe out large swaths of the Kree and Skrull Empires, Tony has been shaken in a way he hasn't been in a while. While the other Avengers have been active on the battlefield ever since then, Iron Man has locked himself into the laboratory of Avengers Mountain alongside fellow super-genius Reed Richards. The two have been scrambling to figure out how to counteract the plans of the Cotati ever since, with Tony increasingly despondent and furious at himself.

As they've worked, Reed has noticed Tony building a new Iron Man suit. Reed was quick to point out the less-than-ideal timing of his newest creation, but Tony responded that whenever he's backed into a corner, working on armors had led him to inspiration in the past. Still, things have taken a turn for the worse on all fronts. After breaching Wakanda, Black Panther has been seemingly killed by Quoi and Swordsman, allowing the Cotati the chance to plant a Death Blossom in the Vibranium rich soil of Wakanda to spread his control of plant-life across the entire galaxy. Meanwhile, Tanalth the Accuser has been revealed to be the former Skrull Empress R'Klll, who has replaced her grandson on the throne and activated the Pyre, designed to force the sun to have go supernova, to destroy the Earth.

With two potential world-ending events both happening within the next 10 minutes, Reed and Tony are apparently Earth's last, best shot at survival. And it appears a lot of the heavy lifting will be on Reed, as it turns out the Iron Man suit Tony has been designing was for him. The color scheme reflects the current blue and black look for the Fantastic Four, and the massive amount of technology inherently present in an Iron Man suit will likely be even more adaptable in Mister Fantastic's hands. The suit marks a huge upgrade to Reed's standard uniform, especially given how quick-thinking he can be when he's focused on a major threat.

The sketch designs for the suit included at the back of the issue also suggest the suit has also been specifically designed to match Reed's shape-shifting abilities, giving Mister Fantastic a durable and flexible armor to work with. Given the galactic nature of both threats, the new armor should also give Mister Fantastic plenty of speed and durability to move around the world at high-speeds and even venture off-planet if need be, leaving Tony to potentially don another suit to provide more help.

While plenty of other heroes have gotten their own Iron Man armors in the past, it's refreshing to see Reed don the armor. Along with his teammates, Reed has plenty of experience adapting and shifting plans to save entire worlds in the past, and he's going to have to be flexible enough to tackle two world-ending threats at once.
