The Mighty Thor was one of several Avengers and other Marvel heroes to experience the infamous '90s reboot known as "Heroes Reborn." This world reimagined the Avengers and Fantastic Four through the creative vision of  Image Comics founders Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld. And after debuting in 1996's Avengers #1 by Liefeld, Jim Valentino and Chap Yaep, this reboot's Thor went on to play a prominent, but unlikely role.

The rebooted Thor was a construct native to "Heroes Reborn's" newly created Counter-Earth, but he would soon be met by his mainstream Marvel Universe counterpart. His violent nature also made him an especially good fit for the grim and gritty '90s. Now, here's how the pocket universe created by Franklin Richards changed Thor so much and what happened when the real God of Thunder finally struck.

In the lead-up t0 "Heroes Reborn," the Avengers and Fantastic Four seemingly died to defeat the evil entity known as Onslaught, who was the dark side of Magneto and Professor X's power. In actuality, they were contained in a pocket dimension by the reality-warping Franklin Richards, where Marvel's floundering characters and books could be rejuvenated.

However, Thor was introduced into this world later than the other heroes, due to his godly nature and powers took quite a bit of focus for Franklin Richards to handle. In his place, Franklin created a sort of stand-in of Thor from scratch on what was dubbed Counter-Earth. Thor was found trapped in a block of ice and was discovered by Donald Blake, the former human host of his mainstream universe counterpart. Loki of Counter-Earth ironically thought that he was the real Loki, and was the only one to be aware that this new universe was artificial in nature.

Loki engineered the newly revived Thor into attacking the Avengers, though Thor would eventually overcome these deceptions and join the team. This evoked the original origin for the team while replacing Hulk with Thor. This resemblance was made even stronger by the fact that this incarnation of the Norse God of Thunder was incredibly violent like a real Viking, putting him at odds with Captain America.

Thor vs Thor

Thor vs Thor Heroes Reborn

In Walt Simonson and Michael Ryan's Avengers #10, a rift in space and time would later be discovered by the Avengers, who at that point had lost the more violent Thor from the team. In this newly discovered space-time rift, the Avengers find the original Marvel Universe Thor, who had not actually been recreated or reborn in their timeline. The more traditional Thor would come to blows with his Counter-Earth doppelganger, mocking his actions in what seemed like an editorial rebuttal against the grim and gritty style comics that obviously influenced "Heroes Reborn."

The Thors would eventually set aside their egregious differences to help take down an immensely powered-up Loki, with the Counter-Earth Thor even appearing as Odin in order to defeat him. Sacrificing himself in battle, the fake deity would prove himself a hero in the end, even earning a proper Viking funeral supplied by S.H.I.E.L.D. and the real Thor. Afterward, the events of "Heroes Reborn" would be brought to an end and promptly forgotten, with no one ever bringing up the false Thor of that universe. This proved that, despite many others trying to take the mantle, there's only one true Thor Odinson in the Marvel Universe,
