Infinity War Prelude Comic Shows Wong Is More Important Than We Knew

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains potential spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War, in theaters May 4.

Not much is known about Marvel Studio’s Avengers: Infinity War, aside from the fact that it involves Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the Guardians of the Galaxy working together to stop Thanos from gathering the Infinity Stones.

Only five of the six Infinity Stones have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving the Soul Stone as the last one to be discovered. Aside from a few central characters like the Guardians and Thor, there aren’t many people in the MCU who are aware the Stones even exist.

According to the second issue of Marvel’s Avengers Infinity War Prelude comic, we can add Doctor Strange’s friend and ally Wong to the list of bona fide Infinity Stone experts.

The comic spends the majority of its time recapping the status of each Infinity Stone throughout the MCU, with Wong dictating their history to Doctor Strange. Wong reveals to Strange that the Stones help maintain balance in the universe, with both acknowledging that the Eye of Agamotto is the Time Stone.

What makes this exchange fascinating is that somehow Wong knows every detail regarding the Infinity Stones. He runs down who has hunted for them, when and where they were used, and their current locations (minus the Soul Stone). It leaves us wondering, just how did Wong obtain this information? Perhaps it was passed down to him by the Ancient One, or maybe Wong uncovered it all on his own.

The one Stone Wong doesn’t have answers for is the Soul Stone, which he believes has the potential to be “the biggest threat of them all.” That’s pretty intimidating to ponder, considering how powerful each Infinity Stone is by itself. If the Soul Stone is indeed the most dangerous of all the Stones, it makes sense for Marvel Studios to have saved its debut for last.

With the Soul Stone still missing, that leaves Infinity War or Avengers 4 as the most logical films for it to finally appear, with an outside shot that Ant-Man and the Wasp could reveal its location and abilities. And with Avengers Infinity War Prelude #2 revealing how important Wong is to the story of the Stones, don’t be surprised to see him play a vital role in the Soul Stone’s debut.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie. The film opens May 4.
