There were many details to glean from Marvel Studios' first look at the making of "Avengers: Infinity War," from comments by the producer, stars and directors to confirmation, through concept art, that the Guardians of the Galaxy will indeed meet Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
That illustration depicts Rocket Raccoon fighting side by side with Chris Hemsworth's god of thunder, who's gripping a long-handled weapon that -- alas! -- is obstructed from our view. Mjölnir, Thor's enchanted hammer, typically has a shorter handle, which raises a couple of questions: Is that Mjölnir? If not, what happens to the weapon between the events of "Thor: Ragnarok" and "Avengers: Infinity War"?
One theory is this weapon is Jarnbjorn, the ax Thor wielded before Mjölnir. It has seen a rise in visibility over the past few years after Thor became unworthy of lifting Mjölnir in the Marvel comics. Also, "Thor: Ragnarok" director Taika Waititi recently shared an image that appeared to reveal both Jarnbjorn and Mjölnir resting beside Thor.
Does Thor somehow become unworthy during the events of "Thor: Ragnarok" and is forced to pick up a new weapon, or did the "Infinity War" concept artist simply take some liberties in rendering the size of Mjölnir? We may have to wait until the release of "Thor: Ragnarok" to find out.
Arriving Nov. 3, “Thor: Ragnarok” stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban and Mark Ruffalo. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, “Avengers: Infinity War” opens May 4, 2018.
