At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, the Mad Titan Thanos collected all six Infinity Stones and snapped his fingers. In doing so, half of all life in the universes crumbled to dust and died, including fan-favorite characters such as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther and the Wasp. The horrific moment has been the subject of a great many discussions by fans, as they struggle to predict how Earth's Mightiest Heroes will manage to undo Thanos' actions in Avengers 4.
But while fans talked about the infinity-powered snap, Marvel never gave the terrible event an official name -- that is, until now.
Recently, an Avengers: Infinity War tie-in young adult novel by writer Brandon T. Snider was released. The book, titled The Cosmic Quest Volume 2: Aftermath, stars Marvel Cinematic Universe characters Dr. Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis as they put together a team of Science Avengers to determine to cause behind the death of half of the Earth's population. And it's in that book that we learn that Thanos' Infinity Snap is officially referred to, in-universe, as "The Decimation."
The name may sound familiar to comic book fans because it does actually refer to a similar event in the Marvel Universe. At the end of the House of M series, Wanda Maximoff used all the might of her powers and infamously declared "No more mutants," a spell that resulted in almost all of the mutant powers disappearing from the world. In the comics, the fallout of this mutant disappearance was called "Decimation," and now it appears as if the name will make the jump from the comics to the screen.
This name actually makes a whole lot of sense considering the circumstances. Of course, no mutants are present in the MCU, but calling the disappearance of half of the world and its heroes "The Decimation" is a nice nod to the comics -- something that directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been known to do. It remains to be seen if the name will actually be used in Avengers 4, but fans can now start using it in their own conversations.
The untitled sequel to Avengers: Infinity War will release on May 3, 2019. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Marvel’s Avengers 4 stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie.
