To put it mildly, Avengers: Infinity War didn't go too well for the Avengers. By the time the movie's final credits rolled, Thanos had wiped out a surprising number of characters, including some of Marvel's most famous heroes. While Joe and Anthony Russo's movie had the biggest opening weekend of all time, it took a lot of major players out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Now, CBR is counting down all of the Avengers and other heroes who survived Avengers: Infinity War. We'll also be looking at some of the other heroes who might still be floating around the MCU after Thanos' snap. Since the TV and film portions of the MCU haven't really crossed over too much recently, this list will focus on characters from the cinematic side of the MCU. In this list, we'll be looking at how some of the survivors made it through Infinity War, and we'll also take a look at some of the MCU heroes who were never definitely dealt with. Whether or not they've debuted onscreen yet, all of the heroes might be part of the inevitable rematch against Thanos in the still-untitled Avengers 4, which is set to be released on May 3, 2019.

SPOILER WARNING: This list contains comprehensive spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War, in theaters now.

20 ALIVE: BLACK WIDOW

Black Widow Scarlett Johanssen Infinity War

Even though she held her own against two separate members of Thanos' Black Order, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow didn't play the biggest role in Avengers: Infinity War. Although she briefly reunited with Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner, the ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. super-spy was mainly relegated to playing a supporting role in some of the movie's many fight scenes. After wounding Corvus Glaive while protecting the Vision, Widow was part of a small group that defeated Proxima Midnight near the end of the movie.

When the dust from the Battle of Wakanda and Thanos' snap finally cleared, she was one of the few Avengers still standing.

Since Black Widow was created by Stan Lee, Don Rico and Don Heck in 1964's Tales of Suspense #52, Natasha Romanova has filled a lot of roles around the Marvel Universe. While she started out as a Soviet spy, she cemented herself as a reliable supporting character during her time with S.H.I.E.L.D., the Avengers and as Daredevil's partner. When Johansson's Black Widow made her cinematic debut in 2010's Iron Man 2, she seemed set to play a similar supporting role in the MCU. After 2012's The Avengers repositioned her as a founding member of the team, Black Widow settled into a more prominent, visible role in the Avengers' adventures in comics, film and TV.

19 MIGHT BE ALIVE: HAWKEYE

Hawkeye Jeremy Renner Avengers Age of Ultron

During Avengers: Infinity War's marketing blitz, many fans noticed that Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye was missing from the film's promotional material. While that initially seemed like an oversight, it's now clear that Hawkeye wasn't in the advertising for Infinity War because he wasn't in Infinity War. The Avengers' archer hasn't been seen onscreen since he was broken out of prison at the end of 2016's Captain America: Civil War. However, an offhand comment during Infinity War revealed that Clint Barton was finishing out his sentence under house arrest at his farm, where he could be with his family.

Since he was created by Stan Lee and Don Heck in 1964's Tales of Suspense #57, Hawkeye has evolved into one of the team's most iconic members, He even co-founded and led the West Coast Avengers, a California-based affiliate Avengers team. Although Renner's Hawkeye was equally inspired by a younger Hawkeye from an alternate reality called the Ultimate Universe, he's kept the character's trademark snarky attitude and underdog spirit. While Hawkeye's fate after Thanos' snap wasn't explicitly addressed in Infinity War, Renner and the Russos have hinted at Hawkeye's role in the next Avengers movie. Even if he survived Thanos' snap, his family might've perished, which would give him a very good reason to come out of retirement in Avengers 4.

18 ALIVE: HULK

Hulk Mark Ruffalo

Even though they share the same body, the Hulk and Bruce Banner have never really gotten along too well onscreen. While both halves of Banner had roles in 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, Josh Brolin's Thanos gave the Hulk one of the most savage beatdowns ever filmed in the opening moments of Avengers: Infinity War. After suffering that embarrassing defeat, Banner couldn't transform into the Hulk for the rest of the film. Thanks to Iron Man's Hulkbuster armor, Banner still managed to defeat Cull Obsidian, one of the most powerful generals of Thanos' Black Order. Although he had to give up one of his armor's arms to send the alien crashing into Wakanda's defense shield, Banner managed to make it out of Infinity War relatively unscathed.

Since the Hulk was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1962's Incredible Hulk #1, Banner has struggled to control the awesome power of the Hulk. While that power made Hulk one of the strongest beings in the Marvel Universe, it hasn't always been translated well onscreen. After 2003's Hulk and 2008's Incredible Hulk earned lukewarm receptions from fans and critics, Ruffalo charmed audiences with his slightly neurotic Banner in a character-defining performance from 2012's The Avengers.

17 MIGHT BE ALIVE: WONG

Wong Benedict Wong Avengers Infinity War

In one of the smartest decisions anyone made during Infinity War, Doctor Strange's partner Wong decided to stay at home in New York instead of fighting the all-powerful Thanos. To be fair, Benedict Wong's Master of the Mystic Arts already did his part by tangling with Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian when the powerful aliens arrived in New York. Over the course of the battle, he saved Iron Man's life, transported Obsidian to an icy tundra and severed part of the alien's arm. After Doctor Strange was captured by Maw, Wong stayed in New York to guard over Doctor Strange's Sanctum.

While that might seem a little cowardly at first glance, Wong was actually taking a fairly prudent action.

The Sanctum must be guarded at all times since it holds numerous powerful mystical artifacts and acts as a barrier against all kinds of interdimensional threats. Since he was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1963's Strange Tales #110, Wong's comic book counterpart has taken his responsibilities equally seriously in the Marvel Universe. Even though Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange perished after Thanos' snap, he claimed that there was only one way to defeat Thanos. As someone who could be the MCU's most powerful living magician, Wong may have a big role to play in the ultimate defeat of Thanos.

16 ALIVE: M'BAKU

Winston Duke as M'Baku in Black Panther

While Ryan Coogler's Black Panther was filled with surprising, star-making performances, one of the film's most unexpected highs was Winston Duke's M'Baku. As the leader of the mountain-dwelling Jabari tribe, M'Baku held a natural rivalry with Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther. While he initially played an antagonistic role, M'Baku proved himself to be a deeply honorable leader who ultimately led his army in defending Wakanda. During his brief appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, M'Baku shared a brief moment on the battlefield with T'Challa before leading his army in the Battle of Wakanda. While his soldiers fought valiantly alongside the Avengers, M'Baku looked on in horror as his army vanished around him after Thanos' snap.

Compared to his comic book counterpart, M'Baku is almost a completely different, arguably much richer character onscreen. In the Marvel Universe, M'Baku is better known as Man-Ape, a gorilla-themed villain who was created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema in 1969's Avengers #62. While he was still part of the Jabari tribe, the mystically-enhanced M'Baku tried to take over Wakanda while Black Panther was serving in the Avengers. After that plot failed, Man-Ape had minor roles on villain teams like the Lethal Legion and the Masters of Evil. Although he's perished in battle a few times, M'Baku has usually come back to life through some sort of mystical means.

15 MIGHT BE ALIVE: SHURI

Shuri Black Panther

Along with M'Baku, one of Black Panther's other breakout characters was Letitia Wright's Shuri. Even though she could've had a charmed life as the Princess of Wakanda, Shuri distinguished herself as a gifted inventor and one of the smartest people in the MCU. Even though she only had a few minutes of screen time in Avengers: Infinity War, she still had enough time to prove that she could outclass one of the world's brightest scientific minds, Bruce Banner. Even though her last-second operation to separate the Vision from the Mind Stone wasn't a success, she still proved that she was more than a worthy ally to Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Since she was created by Reginald Hudlin and John Romita Jr. in 2005's Black Panther #2, Shuri has become an essential part of Wakanda's world. When her brother, T'Challa, was sidelined, Shuri even took over as the Black Panther and the ruler of Wakanda in 2009's Black Panther #5, by Hudlin and Ken Lashley. Although she was later revived, Shuri's reign ended when she perished in battle with the Black Order's Proxima Midnight. Since her fate was never explicitly revealed after Thanos' snap, she could be a big part of the Avengers' next attempt to thwart Thanos.

14 ALIVE: ROCKET RACCOON

Rocket Raccoon Guardians of the Galaxy

Surprisingly, Rocket Raccoon was the only one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy to make it out of Avengers: Infinity War alive. Over the course of the film, the Bradley Cooper-voiced alien gave Thor a spare prosthetic eye and helped the Thunder God restart a dying neutron star to forge Stormbreaker, a half-axe/half-hammer weapon. After landing on Earth, Rocket fought in the Battle of Wakanda before watching his tree-like partner, Groot, fade away in front of him and leave him alone on a world he doesn't know.

Despite his appearance and slightly goofy name, Rocket is a fairly serious character.

In comics, Rocket was created by Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema in 1982's Incredible Hulk #271. Although he was originally created to be a guard at a cosmic asylum, Rocket came into his own as a founding member of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy in 2008's Guardians of the Galaxy #1, by Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning and Paul Pelletier. Like his cinematic counterpart, Rocket is especially knowledgeable about heavy weaponry and has led the team on more than one occasion. In the MCU, Rocket has already lived a life filled with pain and genetic experimentation. Since most of his friends perished after Thanos' snap, he'll almost certainly want to get his revenge against the Mad Titan in the Avengers' next showdown.

13 MIGHT BE ALIVE: ANT-MAN

Ant-Man in the MCU

Unless he was too small to see, Paul Rudd's Ant-Man wasn't in Avengers: Infinity War. Scott Lang's last cinematic appearance was in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. After siding with Captain America during the superhero conflict, Lang ended up imprisoned on the Raft, a hi-tech jail. Until Captain America freed him. Like Hawkeye, Lang took a deal to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest so he could be near his family.

Naturally, Lang's next appearance will be in 2017's Ant-Man and the Wasp. Even though it's being released after Infinity War, Peyton Reed's Ant-Man sequel will take place between the events of Civil War and Infinity War. As previews for the movie have revealed, Lang will make liberal use of the size-growing abilities he discovered in Civil War in his upcoming film. While Lang's comic book counterpart has a similar range of abilities, he's mainly stuck to small-scale crime-fighting since he was created by David Michelinie and John Byrne in 1979's Avengers #181. Unlike the MCU's Lang, Ant-Man is more of a scientist in the Marvel Universe, where he's been a member of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. While there's no guarantee that he'll survive Thanos' snap in his upcoming film, Rudd's Lang has already been all-but-confirmed to play a meaningful role in the next Avengers movie.

12 ALIVE: NEBULA

Nebula Karen Gillan

While she might be one of Thanos' children, Karen Gillan's Nebula has had one of the more surprising characters arcs in the MCU. Although she debuted in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy as Thanos' trusted general, she turned against her father after a lifetime of abuse by the end of the movie. In 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, she made peace with her sister Gamora and helped the Guardians of the Galaxy battle the Celestial Ego. After a failed attempt to take out Thanos, the Mad Titan partially disassembled Nebula in Avengers: Infinity War. Even though this compelled Gamora to reveal the location of the Soul Stone, Nebula was able to put herself back together in time to join the fight against Thanos on his homeworld, Titan. Along with Iron Man, Nebula was one of the only heroes in that battle who survived Thanos' snap.

In comics, Nebula has another kind of personal connection to Thanos. Shortly after she was created by Roger Stern and John Buscema in 1985's Avengers #257, the space pirate claimed that she was Thanos' granddaughter. While her comic book counterpart played a surprisingly big role in the finale of Jim Starlin and Ron Lim's The Infinity Gauntlet, it's not clear whether she'll play a similar one in the next fight against Thanos.

11 MIGHT BE ALIVE: WASP

Wasp Evangeline Lilly

While she hasn't quite taken her first flight as the Wasp yet, audiences met Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne in 2011's Ant-Man. In a sharp departure from the Wasp's comic book origin, Hope helped her dad, Hank Pym, show Scott Lang how to fight and properly use the size-changing Pym Particles. Even though she didn't wear a costume in that movie, she proved herself to be just as competent as the costumed hero. In this summer's Ant-Man and the Wasp, Hope will get a chance to suit up as the pint-sized Wasp for the first time.

Although there's no guarantee that she'll survive Thanos' snap, the Wasp is set to appear in Avengers 4 in some capacity.

Unlike most of the characters in the MCU, Hope doesn't really have a comic book counterpart. The original Wasp, Janet van Dyne, helped form the Avengers a few months after she was created by Stan Lee, H.E. Huntley and Jack Kirby in Tales to Astonish #44. Over the next several decades, she evolved into one of the Avengers' leaders and had a brief marriage to Hank Pym. In one alternate reality, they had a child named Hope who grew into a villain called the Red Queen. In the main Marvel Universe, Nadia Pym, Hank's adult daughter from a previous marriage, recently started sharing the mantle of the Wasp with her stepmother in a slightly confusing arrangement.

10 ALIVE: OKOYE

Okoye in Black Panther

In 2018's Black Panther, Danai Gurira's Okoye proved herself to be one of Wakanda's most dedicated defenders. As the leader of the Dora Milaje, Okoye was the head of Wakanda's royal guard. Beyond the call of duty, she was also close friends with T'Challa and ultimately led the Dora Milaje against Wakanda's usurper, Michael B. Jordan's Killmonger. Although she didn't have that much screen time in Avengers: Infinity War, she and Black Widow held their own against the Black Order's Proxima Midnight in combat. After the Battle of Wakanda ended, Okoye looked on in horror as Black Panther vanished right in front of her.

As one of Wakanda's most prominent surviving military leaders, it's tough to imagine a scenario where Okoye doesn't want to seek out justice for her king. In comics, Okoye has shown T'Challa a similar level of devotion since she was introduced in 1998's Black Panther #1, by Christopher Priest and Mark Texeira. While one of her fellow Dora Milaje members turned into the villain Malice, Okoye remained loyal to T'Challa and stayed by his side when he was sidelined by injuries. While she doesn't have the lengthiest comic book history, Okoye and some other Dora Milaje members are set to take on their first starring role in Wakanda Forever, an upcoming series of one-shots by Nnedi Okorafor, Alberto Jimenez Alburquerque and Anthony Height.

9 MIGHT BE ALIVE: SIF

Sif Jaime Alexander

In Thor's first few movies, Jamie Alexander's Sif fought beside Chris Hemsworth's Thor as one of Asgard's most accomplished warriors. In the post-credits scene of 2013's Thor: The Dark World, she was even entrusted with taking one of the Infinity Stones to the Collector for safekeeping. Despite that, Lady Sif hasn't appeared onscreen since she had a guest-starring role in a 2015 episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. In 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, it was revealed that Tom Hiddleston's Loki had banished her while he posed as the ruler of Asgard. Even though viewers never saw that moment, it likely saved Sif from meeting her untimely demise in Ragnarok. While Asgard and most of its residents perished, Sif survived, as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed.

Although Sif was more associated with bountiful harvests in Norse mythology, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby refashioned her into a fierce warrior for her Marvel Universe debut in 1964's Journey Into Mystery #102. While she married Thor in mythology, she's been a more occasional romantic interest for him in comics. After serving as a supporting character for decades, Sif briefly took on a starring role during Kathryn Immonen and Valerio Schiti's 2013 run on Journey Into Mystery. If the MCU's Sif survived Thanos' snap, it wouldn't be surprising to see her join up with Thor and the other surviving Asgardians, especially since Loki and Idris Elba's Heimdall didn't make it out of Avengers: Infinity War.

8 ALIVE: THOR

Thor Chris Hemsworth Avengers Infinity War

In the MCU, Thor's had a pretty rough few years. As Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder recounted during one of Avengers: Infinity War's quieter moments, he lost his kingdom, his hammer, his eye, his parents and most of his friends over the course of his cinematic appearances. Even though he forged new friendships with his fellow co-founding Avengers, Thor added his brother Loki, his best friend Heimdall and most of the surviving Asgardians to the list of people he lost in Infinity War. Despite all that, Thor put on a brave face and kept the good humor that defined his character in 2017's Thor: Ragnarok. Even though he couldn't save the last of his people from Thanos, Thor forged a new weapon, Stormbreaker, and almost knocked out the Mad Titan with a final blow.

Unfortunately for half of all living beings in the universe, Thor didn't aim for Thanos' head.

When the dust settled, Thor was one of the Avengers' few surviving members. Since Thor helped form the Avengers shortly after he was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby in 1962's Journey Into Mystery #83, he's been one of the team's resident powerhouses. Since Thor almost single-handedly changed the course of the Battle of Wakanda and held his own against Thanos, Infinity War proved that he's arguably the most powerful Avenger onscreen too.

7 ALIVE: VALKYRIE

Valkyrie Tessa Thompson

Thanks to some recent comments from co-director Joe Russo, Marvel fans can rest assured that Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie survived Avengers: Infinity War. In 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, Thompson's disgraced Asgardian warrior won audiences over with her redemptive story arc. After she returned from her self-imposed exile, Valkyrie played a key role in saving most of Asgard's citizens as the kingdom crumbled around her. In the final moments of that film, Valkyrie stood alongside Thor and his allies on a ship that carried the last Asgardian refugees.

Before Infinity War opened, that ship was destroyed, mostly off-screen, by Thanos and his Black Order. Since Valkyrie wasn't seen among the fallen, many viewers assumed that she left the ship in an escape pod, possibly protecting a group of Asgardians, before the carnage began. While there's no guarantee that she survived Thanos' snap, Russo confirmed that she escaped the ship in comments he made during a question-and-answer session at an Iowa high school. Like their mythological counterparts, there's not just one Valkyrie in the Marvel Universe, and the Asgardian female fighting force has been a part of Thor's world since 1963's Journey Into Mystery #91, by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Joe Sinnott. Despite her popularity, the MCU's Valkyrie doesn't have too much in common with Brunnhilde, Marvel's most famous comic book Valkyrie, who's had a minor superhero career that's included stints with the Defenders and the Secret Avengers.

6 ALIVE: WAR MACHINE

war machine is looking to the side in the MCU

After Terrence Howard played James "Rhodey" Rhodes in 2008's Iron Man, Don Cheadle took over the role when the character suited up as War Machine in 2010's Iron Man 2. While Rhodey holds the distinction of being the first character who was recast in the MCU, that's one of the most notable things about Rhodey's unglamorous cinematic career. Even though he was operating as an armored hero at the time, War Machine wasn't included on the first Avengers team. Although he finally joined the team at the end of 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, he was sidelined after being paralyzed from the waist down during 2016's Captain America: Civil War.

By the time Avengers: Infinity War started, Rhodey was working as War Machine again and played a meaningful role in holding back Thanos' forces in the Battle of Wakanda. After Thanos' snap, War Machine was the only non-founding official member of the Avengers who was left standing. For the most part, the MCU's Rhodey is largely the same as his comic book counterpart. After being created by David Michelinie and John Byrne in 1979's Iron Man #118, Rhodey was one of Tony Stark's closest friends, and he wore the Iron Man armor off-and-on throughout the 1980s. After taking the name War Machine, Rhodey had a solid superhero career that ended when Thanos finished him off in 2016's Free Comic Book Day Special: Civil War II, by Brian Michael Bendis and Jim Cheung.

5 MIGHT BE ALIVE: RHOMANN DEY

Nova Corpsman Dey John C Reily

Despite several rumors that claimed Avengers: Infinity War would open with the destruction of Xandar, home of the intergalactic military Nova Corps, Thanos only mentioned destroying that world in passing. Even though Thanos claimed that he completely wiped out the Corps, there's one Nova who could still be out there, Rhomann Dey. In his first and, so far, only cinematic appearance, John C. Reilly's Nova Corpsman became the Guardians' unlikely ally in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. Although he arrested the Guardians at the beginning of the movie, he helped clear their criminal records for saving the planet by the end of the film.

Even though Xandar was destroyed onscreen, that's a key part of Dey's history in comics.

When he was created by Marv Wolfman and John Buscema in 1976's Nova #1, Dey was one of the last surviving Novas after an alien named Zorr destroyed Xandar. Although he was mortally wounded in battle, Dey recruited the human Richard Rider into the Nova Corps. Under the name Nova, Rider served as a hero on Earth and in space, where he became a major player on a grand cosmic scale. Since Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has repeatedly spoken about bringing Rider or another human Nova to the big screen, Dey could feasibly follow his comic book counterpart's path in film.

4 ALIVE: CAPTAIN AMERICA

Captain America Chris Evans Avengers Infinity War

After the events of 2016's Captain America: Civil War, Chris Evans' Captain America was an international fugitive. Along with Black Widow and Anthony Mackie's Falcon, he traveled the world and fought evil from the shadows until Avengers: Infinity War. After resurfacing to save the Vision from the Black Order, he led the charge against Thanos' forces in the Battle of Wakanda. Even though he returned to his heroic roots, Steve Rogers traded his clean-cut red, white and blue look for a beard and a darker, grungy costume.

To his dismay, Captain America was one of the few heroes who survived Thanos' snap. After seeing his partner, Sebastian Stan's Bucky, vanish in front of him, Rogers was one of the first heroes to realize the full extent of what Thanos had done. Since Captain America was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1941's Captain America Comics #1, Rogers has been one of the most effective leaders in the Marvel Universe. Since the MCU's Avengers just suffered one of the biggest losses in the team's history, the heroes will need Cap's inspirational brand of leadership to find a way to defeat Thanos once and for all in the next Avengers movie.

3 MIGHT BE ALIVE: SHARON CARTER

Sharon Carter Emily Van Camp

In comics, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter has been Captain America's most consistent romantic partner and one of his steadiest allies for decades. While Carter has arguably filled some similar roles in the MCU, she's been largely outshined by her late aunt, Peggy. After Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter worked with Captain America during World War II in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter debuted in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. While she initially posed as Rogers' neighbor, she was quickly revealed to be a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent tasked with protecting Captain America. After S.H.I.E.L.D. collapsed in that movie, she began working for the C.I.A. and quietly helped Rogers during 2016's Captain America: Civil War.

Since she was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1966's Tales of Suspense #75, Sharon Carter has been an Avenger and one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most recognizable members in comics. Even though the MCU has enough S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to field a TV show, Sharon still hasn't really had the opportunity to shine onscreen. She hasn't appeared anywhere since she shared a quick kiss with Rogers in Civil War. While there's no guarantee that she survived the effects of Thanos' snap, she could be a valuable asset in rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D. since Nick Fury and Maria Hill are gone.

2 ALIVE: IRON MAN

Iron Man Avengers Infinity WAr

In one of Avengers: Infinity War's more surprising twists, Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark made it out of the movie alive. Since he kicked off the MCU in 2008's Iron Man, Stark has been the fast-talking heart of the Marvel Universe. Over the course of the past decade, Iron Man has gone from a Marvel B-lister to one of this era's defining pop culture icons. Even though he's still the same recognizable character that Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck and Jack Kirby created in 1963's Tales of Suspense #39, the MCU's Iron Man has consistently defied expectations. From revealing his identity at the end of Iron Man to his recent role as Spider-Man's unlikely mentor, the MCU's Iron Man has proven himself to be one of Marvel's smartest, most forward-thinking heroes.

Despite all of his preparation, he still wasn't able to defeat Thanos in Infinity War.

After destroying an alien armada in 2012's The Avengers, Iron Man was the first one of Marvel's heroes to sense the oncoming threat that Thanos posed. Despite all of his preparation, he still wasn't able to defeat Thanos in Infinity War. After Thanos' snap, Stark could only watch helplessly as Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy vanished in front of him. Fueled by watching his friends and allies vanish in front of him, Stark is sure to play a pivotal role in battling Thanos in the next Avengers movie.

1 MIGHT BE ALIVE: CAPTAIN MARVEL

Captain Marvel carol

In what could've been the final moments of his life, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury called one hero when all hope seemed lost. While she wasn't actually in Avengers: Infinity War, that powerful moment set Captain Marvel up as the potential savior of the MCU. Even though audiences won't get to meet Brie Larson's alien-powered hero until Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel, she's already started to cast an imposing presence over the MCU.

While her response to Fury's cosmic beeper suggested that she survived Thanos' snap, there are no guarantees in the Marvel Universe.

In comics, Carol Danvers was created by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan in 1968's Marvel Super-Heroes #13. Although she was initially a supporting character in the adventures of the original, alien Captain Marvel, Danvers eventually gained her own powers and started operating as the hero Ms. Marvel. Despite some notable setbacks, Carol was an Avenger and later, worked closely with the X-Men, on Earth and in space. Since taking the Captain Marvel identity for herself in 2012's Captain Marvel #1, by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Dexter Soy, she's risen through the ranks to become one of Marvel's most visible heroes. Between her roles in Captain Marvel and the next Avengers' movie in 2019, Captain Marvel is set to leave a lasting impression on the MCU's immediate future.
