Rumor: Steve Rogers Assumes New Identity in Avengers: Infinity War

Following the screening of the first footage from Avengers: Infinity War at Disney’s D23 Expo, a new rumor has surfaced seemingly confirming speculation that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers will take on a new identity after the events of Captain America: Civil War.

As fans will recall, at the of the film Steve Rogers is on the run, having sent his iconic shield to Tony Stark following their fight. Many fans assumed we might see Nomad when Evans returned for Infinity War, and speculation only continued following Saturday’s footage, in which Steve Rogers sports a beard and longer hair. According to MCU Exchange, that’s because Rogers will indeed take up the mantle of Nomad.


Fans shouldn’t expect to see Rogers sporting the famous caped blue-and-yellow costume from the comics, but it’s expected the Infinity War suit will pay homage to that in some way.

In the comics, Steve Rogers first donned the Nomad identity in 1974’s Captain America #180 after becoming disillusioned with the United States government. The mantle was short-lived, though, with Rogers returning to the name and costume of Captain America in Issue 184,.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War boasts a sprawling ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie. The film arrives in theaters May 4, 2018, with the untitled sequel opening May 3, 2019.
